Cambodia is an agriculture-based society where some 72 percent of its 13.4 million people are rice farmers. For generations, rice farming has often been subjected to the forces of nature like floods and droughts.

The LDCF-funded climate change adaptation project aims to counter the potential agriculture risks caused by climate change by working with the local research institutions and farmers in testing and promoting rice varieties that can stand with drought or floods up to 12 days.

Through the project, the six rice varieties have been introduced to 30 farming families in Kratie where flood frequently occurs and Preah Vihear province that often experiences drought. Besides introducing the new rice varieties to the farmers, the project also trained farmers in the target areas in diversified agriculture skills such as raising livestock and vegetable gardening.
