Dr. Rosina Bierbaum, Chair of the GEF's Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP) delivered the 14th Annual Robert C. Barnard Environmental Lecture at the American Academy for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) on May 7, 2014.  During her lecture, Dr. Bierbaum discussed the latest findings from climate science, including from the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and underscored how confronting both climate change mitigation and adaptation is imperative for achieving sustainable development and the eradicating poverty.  She also highlighted the efforts of the GEF and other partners to support the efforts of developing countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, adapt to climate change, and address other critical global environmental problems in an integrated manner.
 
Dr. Bierbaum is a Professor and Dean Emerita at the University of Michigan with appointments in both the School of Natural Resources and Environment, and the School of Public Health. She serves on U.S. President Barack Obama's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) and is a lead author of the recently released U.S. National Climate Assessment. Dr. Bierbaum served for two decades in both the legislative and executive branches of the U.S. Government, and ran the first Environment Division of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). She was selected by the World Bank to co-direct its prestigious World Development Report 2010 and served as a World Bank climate fellow.
