The GEF wishes to join the international organizations and secretariats of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests,  to express their deepest condolences on the passing of Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai.

Her passionate advocacy for the environment in her native Kenya inspired many other African countries and the international community to plant and protect trees. Based on her tireless efforts to promote the Green Belt Movement, she was the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004. We are certain her legacy will influence future generations to remember the importance of trees and their essential role in promoting a sustainable planet.
