Japan brings a systemic, integrated approach to environmental problem-solving, and is one of the Global Environment Facility's most important partners in tackling the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. 

Overall, Japan is the second largest contributor to the GEF after the United States, and was the top donor for the seventh replenishment period - also known as GEF-7 - from July 2018 to June 2022.

This publication (in Japanese) provides an overview of the areas in which Japan has played a significant leadership role in and through the GEF, as well as those where a further deepening of the relationship holds opportunity for the years ahead.
