The GEF financed project (Grant: USD 4,000,000; Co-financing: USD 23,522,457), implemented by the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) with support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aims to reduce the emissions/releases, minimize exposure of human beings to UPOPs in strategic sectors including plastics and to advance the Stockholm Convention in Costa Rica.
The project is structured in in four components and the following main outcomes:
• Government and relevant stakeholders involved, and POPs environmental sound management (ESM) capacities strengthened.

Conservation and Sustainable Management of the Dry Forest Landscape

Improve the conservation of the Tropical Dry Forest (TDF) ecosystem and its associated biodiversity by: (i) developing a scheme for targeting forestry incentives and strengthening the governance model for their implementation; (iii) facilitating access to incentives and providing technical assistance to beneficiaries in the planning and implementation of the farm plan; and (iii) evaluating the scheme to propose policy recommendations to channel forestry incentives towards the country’s conservation needs.

The project seeks to strengthen the management of the seven biosphere reserves (BR) of Ecuador through the design and implementation of multi-level and multi-stakeholder coordination mechanisms, the adoption of planning tools with a landscape approach and the improvement of governance, training and communication. The project also aims to improve the conservation, sustainable development and research functions in two specific BRs: Bosque Seco in Loja (RBBS) and Chocó Andino in Pichincha (RBCAP).
