planetGOLD 2020/2021 Annual Progress Report

This report provides an overview of the progress made by the GEF-funded and UNEP-led planetGOLD program from July 2020 through June 2021, and reviews advances made toward closing financing gaps, supporting formalization of the sector, and connecting miners with mercury-free technology and formal gold markets

As we reflect on the challenges of the past year, the planetGOLD program is also looking forward to significant growth and expansion. The program will soon welcome eight more countries, with seven more anticipated to begin implementation in 2023.

Supporting transparency to drive ambitious climate action

Over the past five years, the Capacity-building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT) has helped more than 80 countries improve their ability to monitor and share their progress toward international climate goals. The improved reporting and transparency resulting from CBIT support has had a truly game-changing impact – not only for tracking progress on reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also by supporting informed climate policy-making in countries around the world.

TNFD releases first beta version of nature-related risk management framework

New GEF-funded project to protect forests, boost agriculture, and support livelihoods in Liberia

The Global Environment Facility Council has approved a $74.3 million project to boost conservation and restoration of globally important forests in northwest Liberia that face heightened deforestation threats. The project will also improve livelihoods of local communities facing high poverty rates.
