The long-term goal of this project is the consolidation in northwest Mato Grosso (an area comparable in size to Panama) of an integrated matrix of different land uses consisting of contiguous blocks of intact primary forest cover on private lands, corridors of secondary regeneration and more intensive agrosilvopastoral systems and permanent forest management. The project will demonstrate a widely replicable, integrated approach to the protection and sustainable use of biodiversity on private lands. Project outputs will include a greater emphasis on biodiversity protection in ecological-economic zone and the identification of high biodiversity areas for future protection. There will also be strengthened municipal planning, development of supportive policies and instruments and monitoring through the incorporation of biodiversity conservation values.
