Protected Areas and Wildlife Management Project
The development objective of the proposed project is the improved management of Trinidad and Tobago’s protected areas and wildlife resources. Project components would include: (i) establishment of the National Parks and Wildlife Authority; (ii) establishment and management of national parks and other protected areas; and (iii) community development that is compatible with biodiversity conservation. The project’s global objective is to conserve globally important coastal habitats that are included in the "Global 200" ecoregions and are also Ramsar sites.
Integrated Coastal Resources Management Project
The project seeks to improve the management and conditions of coastal and marine resources and biodiversity, and to reduce poverty in coastal communities that in a cyclical fashion contribute to further resource depletion and degradation.
Ozone Depleting Substances Phaseout Project
This project will target priority ODS-consumption phaseout opportunities in 16 subprojects in the refrigeration, aerosol, foam and solvent sectors, phasing out annual consumption of approximately 2273 tons of ODS, equivalent to 69% of Ukraine's 1994 weighted annual consumption . It also will provide technical assistance in both government and enterprises to facilitate implementation of the ODS Country Program.
Consolidation and Implementation of the Patagonia Coastal Zone Management Programme for Biodiversity Conservation
This project is aimed at the improvement in the quality of life of human communities who depend on coastal resources while maintaining biodiversity and productivity of Patagonia's ecosystems.
Conservation Management of Eritrea's Coastal, Marine and Island Biodiversity
The objective of the project is to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of the globally significant biodiversity of Eritrea's coastal, marine and island (CMI) ecosystems. These are currently threatened by the rapid development of fisheries, tourism and oil exploration. The project will facilitate sustainable development of the CMI resources, through a participatory management framework, establishment of conservation areas and species programs, an operational information system, and increased public awareness of the needs and benefits of CMI biodiversity.
Rehabilitation of Protected Areas in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
The project will assist DRC in (a) restructuring the ICCN, (b) rehabilitating back to basic functioning of the protected areas, and (c) initiate the involvement of local communities in the management of its protected areas system to ensure the conservation of its important biological diversity.
Central Asia Transboundary Biodiversity Project
Preparation of management plans and investment programs for the project 4 protected areas; a social assessment to identify the impacts of PAs on local inhabitants and vice versa, and options for aligning conservation and economic activities, design of a public awareness component; institutional and legal assessments; assessment of training needs; detailed project costing.
Renewable Energy and Regional Development Project - Szekesfehervar Biomass-Gas CHP Project
This project would decrease greenhouse gas emissions while providing heat and competitively priced electricity to the residents of Szekesfehervar by substituting straw and natural gas for fuel oil in the local district heating plant. Secondary benefits to Hungary include increased rural employment and incomes through collection and utilization of agricultural waste straw, and reduced reliance on imported oil. The project will demonstrate the potential in central Europe for biomass- and natural gas-powered integrated district heating/combined cycle cogeneration technology applications.
Global International Waters Assessment (GIWA)
The overall objective of this project is to produce a fully comprehensive and integrated Global International Waters Assessment. The outcome of the project is to provide an overarching structure and framework for deciding on those issues and problems, and those regions, that would receive priority in the GEF International Waters Portfolio.
Mountain Areas Conservancy Project (MACP)
The objective of the project is to support the conservation of biodiversity in Krakoram-Hindu Kush in the western Himalayan mountain in northern Pakistan. This is an area approximately 1.1 million ha in size in four montane ecological zones. One site on the confluence of the Himalaya and Karakoram ranges is famous for more than 250 varieties of medicinal plants and species, including the endangered Kot (costus roots). Another site in the alpine habitats is an important flyway for over 200 species of birds.
