Choco-Andean Corridor
The proposed MSP project would help to preserve the threatened biodiversity of the Southern section of the Choco-Andean ecosystems. Project goals would include: (i) enhance effectiveness of the existing protected natural areas; (ii) secure functional connectivity between 2 major ecosystems of NW Ecuador the Choco bioregion and the Andean Cloud forests; (iii) increase awareness of local communities; (iv) investigate and promote environmentally sustainable methods; and (v) influence regional and national policies to support sustainability.
Co-generation of Electricity and Steam Using Sugarcane Bagasse and Trash
This project aims at reducing Cuba’s energy-related CO2-emissions by removing barriers to the substitution of sugarcane bagasse and trash for fuel oil in power and steam co-generation. This will be achieved by demonstrating the technical, economic and financial viability to establish companies in the vicinity of sugar mills to co-generate steam and power by using biomass-fired high-pressure condensing-extraction steam turbine technology.
Wind Power Market Development Initiative
The project will promote the development of the wind energy market in Kazakhstan by removing the existing barriers to and reducing the implementation costs of wind energy projects by: (a) assisting the government to formulate a cross-sectoral national wind energy program; (b) providing information for and building the local capacity to develop wind energy projects and to organize financing for them (including site “mapping” and expansion of the wind speed measurement program); (c) facilitating the construction of the first “demonstration” wind farm to prepare ground for and reduce the risks of
Krakow Energy Efficiency Project
The objectives of the GEF project are to: (i) facilitate the participation of local banks in financing the ESCO component of the proposed IBRD project, by reducing the credit risks for eligible ESCO clients and extending loans directly to these clients; and (ii) facilitate the implementation of energy efficiency measures having payback periods extending beyond the ESCO financing terms.
Formulation of a Strategic Action Program for the Integrated Management of Water Resources and the Sustainable Development of the San Juan River Basin and its Coastal Zone
The Strategic Action Programme formulated under this project will contribute to the conservation of natural ecosystems and to social and economic development in order to satisfy present and future demands minimizing water conflicts.
Small Grants Program (Second Operational Phase) - 3rd Year
The second operational phase of the GEF Small Grants Program (GEF/SGP) was approved by the GEF Council in October 1998. A two-year replenishment for $31.619 million was granted and it was agreed that a subsequent annual “rolling” financial modality would be adopted to ensure continuity of program activities. The request for replenishment for SGP operations in year 3 was to be submitted at the end of year 1. Within the adopted programmatic approach a number of benchmarks and deliverables were to be met each year.
Biodiversity Conservation Project
In conjunction with the IBRD-supported Native Forests and Protected Areas Project, the project will expand the protected area system through the creation and management of protected areas in currently unprotected ecosystems of global biological significance (eg, Pampas grass lands, Andean Puna, the Chaco, Patagonian Steppe, etc.).
Biodiversity Resources Development
The project seeks to demonstrate that increased and systematically catalogued information about species would increase the value of biological diversity and the marketability of biodiversity services.
Protected Areas System Phase 1
Project Description (1997) The proposed NPAS project will analyse and apply biological, socio-economic and land-use data to provide a sound basis for designing and implementing a national protected areas system (NPAS).
People, Land Management, and Environmental Change (PLEC)
PLEC is a global project on agrodiversity of different ecosystems (semi-arid, mountain, forest, and wetland) in the tropics and sub-tropics. Its purpose is to establish how sustainable and conservationist development can be achieved by participatory methods bringing together farmers' natural resource and biodiversity management approaches and scientists' knowledge in a productive context. Major activities include demonstration sites, biodiversity assessments, participatory rural appraisals, outreach and experimental work, capacity strengthening and training, and networking and dissemination.
