Renewable Energy and Capacity Building
The objective of this project is to remove barriers to the expanded and sustainable utilization of renewable energy in Sri Lanka. The project will facilitate and accelerate the use of renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency measures in Sri Lanka thus reducing the need for additional fossil fuel thermal power stations and greenhouse gas (GHG) production (ie. carbon dioxide) associated with fossil fuel power stations and the decentralized use of kerosene and woodfuel.
Inventory, Evaluation and Monitoring of Botanical Diversity in Southern Africa: A Regional Capacity and Institution Building Network
Through networking and developing existing capacities within the southern African region, this project will build the effective capacity of professional and support staff in 10 countries to inventory, evaluate and monitor some 30,0000 species of flowering plants and ferns (10% of the global flora) within arid, mediterranean, forest, mountain, coastal and wetland ecosystems.
Integrated Management of Jigme Dorji National Park
This is a full project supporting the Royal Government of Bhutan in strengthening the integrated management of Jigme Dorji National Park, Bhutan's largest and one of the most diverse protected areas containing globally significant biodiversity. The project will be implemented according to two components. The first will strengthen Park management and the second will involve the incorporation of local communities within the Park in implementing a Community Natural Resource Management Plan.
Final Consolidation and Conservation of Azraq Wetlands and Dana Wildlands by RSCN to Address New Pressures
Present project aims to consolidate the pilot phase project JOR/92/G31 - Conservation of Dana and Azraq Protected Areas to address the new threat (unforeseen at the time of project preparation in 1992/1993) and pressures brought about by the Peace Accord in the Dana and Mujib Reserves (as strategic nodes in the Rift Valley ecosystem) and the Azraq Wetland Reserves.
Atlantic Biological Corridor
The ABC project promotes long-term integrity of a Biological Corridor along Nicaragua's Atlantic slope. It will support preparation and implementation of protected area mgt. plans, and will fund subprojects in direct support of biodiversity conservation. It will assist local indigenous communities in demarcating their territories that abut biologically important zones. Project includes capacity-building, public awareness in protection and sustainable use of biodiversity for indigenous and non-indigenous communities in the region, and for municipal and regional authorities.
Conservation and Sustainable Use of the Biodiversity of Socotra Archipelago
The focus of the project will be the development and implementation of a management plan which will integrate conservation and sustainable use of the outstanding endemic biodiversity of Socotra Archipelago, with development objectives. This project will work closely with a UNDP Country Programme project focussing on social development and basic infrastructure for the local communities.
Energy Efficiency Strategy to Mitigate Greenhouse Gas Emissions
The proposal is targeted at overcoming barriers to increased energy efficiency and the associated reduction in GHG emissions, by focused, practical subprojects, organised into three elements: national capacity building; supporting demonstrations; and project management.
Renewable Energy-Based Electricity for Rural, Social and Economic Development in Ghana
Ghana's electric power is operated by two parastatal utilities: the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Electricity Corporation of Ghana (ECG). The VRA is responsible for power generation and transmission at 161 KVA and 225 KVA. The ECG is responsible for power distribution in the south; in the north, the Northern Electricity Department (NED), a subdivision of VRA, handles distribution. VRA and ECG report to the Ministry of Mines and Energy. The Government of Ghana is committed to extension of electricity services to every community of 500 people or more by the year 2000.
Conservation of the Asiatic Cheetah, its Natural Habitat and Associated Biota
The main objective of this project is for the conservation of the Asiatic cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus venaticus) in the I.R. of Iran and the related complex of rare and endangered wild species and their natural habitats with the support and collaboration of local communities.
