Arun Valley Sustainable Resource Use and Management Pilot Demonstration Project
Arun Valley being one of the most important mountains areas embodying rich fauna and flora of global significance, can contribute a lot if the natural resources are managed with the proper understanding of social and environmental sustainablility. The proposed project aims to mitigate the major threats to natural resources, especially the forest and water from anthropogenic activities, and design and evolve a pilot management project with locally tested and proven solutions for integrating local community participation in the management of natural resources ( forest, soil and water).
Integrated Marine and Coastal Resource Management
The proposed project will strengthen the conservation and management of globally significant marine and coastal biodiversity in Senegal. Consequently, it will answer priorities identified in the National Biodiversity Strategy and the National Environment Action Plan. The project’s specific objectives will be to: 1. Strengthen the management of existing coastal and marine protected areas; 2. Develop and implement participatory systems for managing biodiversity in a sustainable manner. 3.
In-Situ Conservation of Kazakhstan's Mountain Agrobiodiversity
The project focusses on the conservation of key areas of mountain agro-biodiversity in Kazakhstan. The immediate project objective is that stakeholders conserve and sustainably use agro-biodiversity in two priority sites within Kazakhstan’s Tien Shan Mountains by developing and applying new methods and tools for conservation, including partnerships among conservation and land-use agencies, local governments, SPAs, local communities and the private sector.
The Development and Management of the Selous-Niassa Wildlife Corridor
The Selous – Niassa Wildlife corridor is classified as a threatened miombo woodland ecosystem linking the Selous and Niassa Game Reserves, two of the largest protected areas in Tanzania and Mozambique. If the predicted development pressures on this Corridor are not addressed this corridor and associated conservation benefits could lose its ecological integrity and so conservation role in the next six - seven years. Immediate Objectives 1.
Biodiversity Conservation of Lake Bosumtwe Basin
Bosomtwe is one of the six major meteoric lakes in the world and its ecological uniqueness makes it one of the most important habitats for rare and endemic plant and animal species. The main objective and activities as stated in the proposal are in line with the government's policy of conserving and sustainably managing natural resources and land use in Ghana as contained in the Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan which is currently being finalized.
The Greater Berbak-Sembilang Integrated Coastal Wetlands Conservation Project
This project will: (1) prepare and implement a management plan for the Greater Berbak-Sembilang Ecosystem, based on biodiversity conservation values and socio-economic realities; (2) expand the National Parks within the ecosystem to more effectively protect the entire ecosystem; (3) strengthen national park management; and (4) increase community and NGO involvement in park management and biodiversity conservation.
Albarradas in Coastal Ecuador: Rescuing Ancient Knowledge on Sustainable Use of Biodiversity
This proposal combines archeology and ecology to develop an understanding of how ancient peoples in the coastal zone of Ecuador coped with the El Nino phenomenon. The move to adapt technologies to a more modern system could help to conserve the wild relatives more effectively.
Valdivian Forest Zone: Private-Public Mechanisms for Biodiversity Conservation
The proposed MSP would support the development of a system of public/private protected areas, starting with 4-5 sites of recognized global importance.
Dry Forest Biodiversity Conservation
The proposed MSP would build on activities supported under the IBRD/GEF OECS Ship Waste project related to the Grenada Dove. The proposed MSP would take a broader approach, with the goal of promoting the conservation of the dry forest ecosystem and component species of special significance in Grenada. Project activities would be based on effective stakeholder participation, and would include: (1) Environmental education, (2) Ecosystem management, (3) Biodiversity conservation research.
Capacity Building to Reduce Key Barriers to Energy Efficiency in Russian Residential Buildings and Heat Supply
The proposal addresses three key activities that represent the greatest opportunities for energy efficiency improvement and energy saving in heat supply and consumption in the city of Vladimir: institutional changes that create incentives (where none now exist) for greater energy efficiency and energy conservation in existing distribution and end-use infrastructure; greater penetration of autonomous sources of heat; and the capacity to analyse the financial and economic aspects and feasibility of capital investment projects for commercial and multi-lateral financing.
