Control of Greenhouse Gas Emissions through Energy Efficient Building Technology in West Africa
In West Africa, operating large buildings accounts for 25 to 30% of the total consumption of electricity, most of which is generated by thermal power plants causing the emission of greenhouse gases, which are added to emissions from the other local or global sources.
Conservation Strategies for Rhinos in South East Asia
Project initiates full implementation of action plan prepared by IUCN expert group and develops funding plan to ensure rhino conservation strategy's sustainability. Creates databases and analysis of rhino habitat.
Institutional Support for the Protection of East African Biodiversity
This regional project (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda) supports existing government and non-governmental organziations that are concerned with the conservation and management of natural resources to enhance their capacity to deal with biodiversity conservation. This project combines institutional support (education, in-service training and awareness-enhancing activities) with on-the-ground conservation activity that is intended to put training into practice.
South Pacific Biodiversity Conservation Programme
Project protects biological diversity of 15 island states by facilitating establishment of conservation areas with agreed criteria for development based on long-term ecological sustainability. Supports scientific and technical assessments, trains NGO and government officials, facilitates extensive consultations with local groups, assists with initial management of protected areas, and raises public awareness.
Pollution Control and Other Measures to Protect Biodiversity in Lake Tanganyika
The 5-year project aims to improve understanding of the ecosystem function and effects of stresses on the lake system; to take action on all other measures necessary to maintain the health and biodiversity of the ecosystem; and to coordinate the efforts of the four countries to control pollution and to prevent the loss of the exceptional diversity of Lake Tanganyika.
Development of Wildlife Conservation and Protected Areas Management
Project raises scientific and technical capacity of government officials to establish and manage protected areas and communicate their importance to local people. Trains staff in management planning, develops investment strategies as part of management plans, establishes four new portected areas, and reduces human/elephant conflict through survey of elephant population.
Community Based Rangeland Rehabilitation for Carbon Sequestration
Carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation in region where drought and overgrazing have had drastic effects. Project develops and implements community-based land use and range management master plans, revegetates economically-sensitive areas, and tests several new techniques to rehabilitate rangeland.
Uganda photovoltaic pilot project for rural electrification
The Government of Uganda is committed to addressing the energy needs of the majority of its citizens who live in the rural areas. To achieve the objectives, the project strategy will be to establish programmatic and/or commercial linkages between local industry/importers, banking institutions, NGOs/cooperatives, training institutions, and Government agencies through the financing, design, installation and maintenance of at least 840 household and 4 community-based PV systems in 4 trading centers on a pilot basis.
Conservation And Sustainable Use of the Barrier Reef Complex
This project which builds on the achievements of the GEF-funded pilot phase project seeks to operationalize the recently passed Coastal Zone Management Act. This Act provides the institutional framework for the implementation of targeted interventions for biodiversity protection. Belize's coastal zone is made up of globally significant diversity of ecosystems and organisms, including the longest barrier reef (220 km long) in the Western Hemisphere. Five of the marine protected areas (MPAs) targeted in this project are World Heritage Sites.
Priority Actions to Consolidate Biodiversity Protection in the Sabana-Camaguey Ecosystem
The project is aimed at supporting the incorporation of biodiversity concerns into integrated coastal zone management. This consolidation phase project focuses on the northern archipelago of the Sabana-Camaguey Ecosystem (SCE) in central Cuba, which harbors marine and terrestrial biodiversity of global significance. The diversity is threatened principally by conventional tourism development , and more locally and to a much lesser extent, from over-fishing and agro-industrial pollution.
