Ozone Depleting Substance Consumption Phase-out (first tranche)
The first of three groups of sub-projects in the GEF-supported Russian ODS Phaseout Program, this project will eliminate annual consumption of approximately 2573 metric tons of weighted, ozone-depleting substance potential, or about 5% of Russia's 1992 weighted consumption, through (a) replacing CFC propellant with hydrocarbon aerosol propellant in a major spray-products enterprise and (b) replacing CFC-12 with a propane/butane mixture in a refrigeration products enterprise.
Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) Technology Application Project
Promote building integrated PV (BIPV) applications for new and existing buildings, integrated with building design and energy efficiency. Includes targeted research, capacity building for local manufacturers and architect/engineers, regulatory frameworks, and pilot demonstrations. Concept fits with both technology market aggregation/innovation strategic priority (OP7--distributed generation) and power sector policy strategic priority (OP6). GEF $2 m., others (government, private sector, donors) $5 m, total $7 m. PDF $130,000 from GEF, $170,000 co-financing from others.
Energizing Rural Transformation
Promotes renewable energy for grid-based power generation, rural home lighting, rural schools and health clinics, and telecommunications to rural communities and enterprises, all integrated with national policies for rural electrification and telecommunications. Provides business development assistance to rural businesses to deliver renewable energy. Initial subsidies for off-grid systems are eventually replaced by a rural access trust fund. New financing mechanism for grid-based power are developed, including carbon finance.
Renewable Energy Market Transformation (REMT)
Promote grid-based renewable power generation both for utility sales by power developers and for self-generation and consumption by sugar and paper industries. Promote commercial solar water heating to displace electric water heating. Assist government to create policy and institutional frameworks for renewable power generation through technical assistance, followed by investments from carbon and private financing sources.
Total Sector Methyl Bromide Phase Out in Countries with Economies in Transition
This regional intervention aims to support all eligible CEIT in their efforts to achieve compliance with the Copenhagen Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, specifically the agreed control schedule for Methylbromide (MBr). Country level activities to identify and phase out MBr consumption by the Protocol deadlines will be prepared by UNEP and UNDP in partnership with the recipient countries, and in close consultation with the Implementation Committee of the Montreal Protocol Parties.
Conservation & Management of Pollinators for Sustainable Agriculture through an Ecosystem Approach
The development goal of the project is to conserve, sustainably use and manage pollinators. The project has three principal objectives. The project will (1) develop and implement tools, methodologies, strategies and best management practices for pollinator conservation and sustainable use.
Regional System of Protected Areas for Sustainable Conservation and Use of Valdivian Temperate Rainforest
Chile’s natural isolation and topographic diversity result in very high levels of species diversity - some 28,450 native species are known - and one of the highest levels of endemism in the Latin America and Caribbean region. Serious government commitment to biodiversity conservation has resulted in an impressive National System of State Wilderness Protected areas, including 31 national parks, 15 national monuments, and 48 national reserves which cover more than 14 million hectares. In addition, 300 private protected areas cover another 1.1 million hectares.
Transfrontier Conservation Areas and Sustainable Tourism Development Project
The Global Objective of the project is to ensure the sustainable management and conservation of Mozambique’s global biodiversity assets and critically important transboundary ecosystems through an integrated ecosystem management approach. The Project (TFCATDP) builds upon the experience of the first GEF-funded TFCA Pilot and Institutional Strengthening Project (TFCA) aimed at assisting Mozambique to capitalize on unique opportunities in biodiversity conservation as a basis for tourism and rural development.
Restoration, Protection and Sustainable Use of the Sistan Basin
The Sistan basin stretches across parts of south-western Afghanistan and south-eastern Iran. This inland basin is fed by rivers originating in the Central Highlands of Afghanistan. The basin includes a complex and unique wetlands system consisting of three large shallow lakes and a series of smaller lakes and marshes with extensive reed-beds. The lowest point in the basin, and hence the ultimate destination for waters, is the saline Godzareh depression in Afghanistan. The basin constitutes an excellent example of large, permanent, freshwater wetlands within an extremely arid desert region.
Community-Based Ecosystem Management Project
The main objective of the PIDR is to achieve the goals as defined in the rural development strategy: (i) sustainable growth of agricultural production; (ii) protection of biodiversity and sustainable ecosystem management; and (iii) reinforced human capacity in the rural sector.
