WB/GEF POL: Manila Third Sewerage Project (MTSP) - under WB/GEF Partnership Investment Fund for Pollution Reduction in the LME of East Asia
The Metro Manila area has a concentration of population of 12 million people, and practically all the sewage is discharged without treatment. The Manila Bay, Pasig River, and the Laguna Lake represent three key water bodies of socio-economic importance to the country, all exhibiting varying degrees of environmental degradation. These water bodies reflect the general state of Philippine waters, which are seriously confronted with untreated domestic sewage contamination problems.
Lake Malawi/Nyasa Biodiversity Conservation
Lake Malawi, Africa's third largest lake, is a unique freshwater ecosystem, home to over 500 endemic species of fish. The project will conduct faunal surveys, identify biodiversity hotspots, prepare a conservation and management plan for the lake, recommend revisions to national environmental legislation, and fund environmental training and education activities. Parallel Canadian project (C$4.2m) will finance capacity-building for research through twinning with a Canadian institution, limnology and water quality monitoring, laboratory equipment and public education.
Protected Areas Program
The project supports selected conservation activities on the basis of detailed management plans for ten protected area sites. The development and supervi-sion of management plans will be guided by Technical Advisory Committees, composed of representatives of local communities, non-governmental organizations, local governments and other stakeholders. An ecotourism plan will be prepared and implemented in one of the protected area sites on a pilot basis, for potential replication in other areas.
Clearing House Mechanism Enabling Activity
This project will assist the national Government to meet its obligations under the Convention on Biological Diversity.
First National Report to the COP
The Biodiversity Enabling Activity for Mongolia will assist the Ministry for Nature and the Environment to disseminate the country's recently completed National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan and prepare the First National Report to the Conference of the Parties.
Biodiversity Conservation in Nepal
Promotion of ecosystem conservation with local involvement to ensure that communities benefit from project activities. Assistance in formulating National Biodiversity Action Plan. Selected activities of plan will be accompanied by training, equipment provision, and development of a system to monitor biodiversity and project impacts.

Effective Protection with Community Participation of the New Protected Area of San Lorenzo
The project would help to further develop the existing protected area with funding to develop a long-term strategy for conservation. Specific objectives will be to develop and excute plans for protection mgmt., community education, biodiversity compatible income generation for the local communities, and design and implement appropriate legal, financial and instutional frameworks to ensure effectiveness and viability in the area.
Biodiversity Conservation in the Darien Region
The objective of this project is to develop elements which permit consolidation of a new strategy of development in the Darien region and its adjacent areas, based on the application of scientific knowledge and the identification of options for the management of biodiversity which guarantee its sustainable protection and use, in cooperation with local communities.
Conservation and Sustainable Use of Medicinal Plants
Project will design and implement a medicinal plants conservation program. For five botanical reserves where medicinal plants are collected from the wild, it will support baseline research, monitoring, conservation planning, community organizing, enrichment plantings, research on traditional medicinal plant knowledge, sustainable economic activities relating to medicinal plants or taking pressures off wild resources, improved marketing of such plants, and education.
