Control of Invasive Species in the Galapagos Archipelago
The aim of the project is to protect the exceptional biodiversity of the archipelago from the introduction of alien species. It involves the improvement of quarantine systems, research programs on methods of controlling invasions and eradication, animal & plant species eradication pilot programs, the establishment of a $15 m trust fund, with $5 m in financing from the GEF, and awareness-building among populations.
Integrated Water and Ecosystems Management Project
The main objective of the project is to assist the Government of Albania in improving the management of uncontrolled wastewater discharging into international waters which is threatening the global significant ecosystems along the coastline of Albania. The project will contribute to increase global environmental benefits by: (i) reducing sewage pollution loads generated by urban settlement areas of the three coastal cities Durres, Lezha and Saranda and (ii) promoting and improving the management of the tidal Kune-Vain marshland (near Lezha).
Lima Urban Transport
The objectives of the proposed program are to create and foster an efficient multi modal and poverty oriented urban transport system, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and local and air and noise pollution, and to enhance the legal and institutional framework that ensure the sustainability of implemented measures.
Demand-Side Management and Energy Efficiency Program
This DSM operation is associated with the IDA System Efficiency Improvement, Equitization and Renewables Project (SEIER) and part of a long-term power sector strategy for Vietnam. The project consists of two components: (i) a second phase DSM component under Electricty of Vietnam (EVN); and (ii) implementation of a pilot commercial EE program by the Ministry of Industry (MoI) to support emerging Energy Service Industry.
Biodiversity Conservation and Marine Pollution Abatement
Biodiversity conservation component comprises: (a) the restoration and preservation of the ecosystem of Aldabra Atoll by strengthening conservation management and scientific research and control of feral goats; and (b) a protection program for the Green and Hawksbill Turtles. Marine pollution component covers the analysis of the steps needed to comply with MARPOL standards for ship waste treatment and actions required to control pollution from commercial shipping, fishing and leisure craft.
Building the Inter-American Biodiversity Information Network (IABIN)
The project will assist countries in the region to define and establish the Inter-American Biodiversity Information Network (IABIN) an important tool to assist in decision-making related to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and its biological resources. It will develop an internet-based platform to provide access to scientifically credible biodiversity information currently existing in individual institutions and agencies in the American continent.
Capacity building for Stage II Adaptation to Climate Change (Central America, Mexico and Cuba)
The goal of this pilot project is to enable a significant number of countries through capacity building to prepare for Stage II adaptation in the context of non-Annex I National Communications, as envisaged by Articles 4.1 (b) (d) (e) of the UNFCCC and Decision 2/CP.4. The objectives of the project are to develop an adaptation policy framework and to prepare national adaptation strategies for a few priority sectors that can be integrated into sustainable development plans of the participating countries.
Climate Change Enabling Activity (Additional Financing for Capacity Building in Priority Areas)
The National Communication Support Programme (NCSP) is currently developing regional/global proposals in several areas of work that might have implications for the national activities described in this project. Implementation of the project will be carried out in close co-ordination with the NCSP to ensure that areas of synergy will be identified where possible, and to avoid duplication for cost effectiveness. The country will be informed of the proposed NCSP activities as soon as they are underway.
Establishing Conservation Areas Landscape Management (CALM) in the Northern Plains
Design and implement a landscape level conservation program (CALM) through a "Living Landscapes" approach to conserve key components of biodiversity which are either unique to the landscape or for which the landscape acts as a critical range. To carry out focused site-specific conservation interventions at key sites to conserve important biodiversity. To increase the capacity of Government staff, particularly at provincial level, to carry out biodiversity conservation. To increase awareness of conservation issues and priorities throughout stakeholders across the area.
