Polish Energy Efficiency Motors Programme
The Polish Energy Efficient Motors Programme (PEMP) project aims to overcome barriers to increased market penetration of energy efficient motors and related efficiency improvements in electric motor systems. The project has four main activities to be supported under the GEF. The first major activity focuses on building capacity and raising awareness by providing information and services related to energy efficient electric motor systems.
Renewable Energy for Electricity Generation-Renewable Electrification of the Galapagos Islands
The project aims at reducing Ecuador’s energy-related CO2 emissions by introducing PV and wind energy as a substitute for fossil fuel (mainly diesel) utilised in electricity generation, specifically for the Galapagos Archipelago. In addition, the project will substantially decrease the volume of diesel annually shipped to the island, thereby reducing the environmental threat of an oil spill that can cause great damage to the biodiversity found in and around the coastal ecosystem of the islands.
Conservation of Pu Luong-Cuc Phuong Limestone Landscape
The project aims to protect this globally important area and its wildlife not only through enabling the establishment of one new protected area and strengthening the existing protected areas system in the limestone range but also through building the capacity of relevant stakeholders to manage the wider karst ecosystem through a regional landscape plan. It will improve the conservation status of the critically endangered Delacour's langur, and generate public support for karst conservation.
Conservation and Sustainable Management of Below Ground Biodiversity, Phase I
The objective of this project is to enhance awareness, knowledge and understanding of below-ground biological diversity (BGBD) important to sustainable agricultural production in tropical landscapes by the demonstration of methods for conservation and sustainable management.
Small Grants Program (Second Operational Phase) - 4th year
The second operational phase of the GEF Small Grants Program (GEF/SGP) was approved by the GEF Council in October 1998. A two-year replenishment for $31.619 million was granted and it was agreed that a subsequent annual “rolling” financial modality would be adopted to ensure continuity of programme activities. The replenishment for SGP operations in year 3 was approved by the Council in May 2000 for $22.823 million. The request for SGP replenishment for year 4 was to be submitted at the end of year 2 (May 2001), however it was postponed until December 2001.
Management and Conservation of Wetland Biodiversity in the Esteros del Ibera
The objective of the project is to protect and manage for sustainable use, globally significant wetland biodiversity in a threatened ecoregion of Argentina, with full participation of local stakeholders.
Global Biodiversity Forum (GBF): Multistakeholder Support for the Implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity - Phase III
The central thrust of this project will be to: (a) provide an informal mechanism where the CBD parties and major stakeholder groups can explore and debate in-depth central issues around CBD implementation; (b) to expand rhew CBD constituency to foster broader involvement and commitment of independent, public and business sector partners in actively supporting and assessing CBD implementation; (c) to catalyze new cooperative partnership and initiatives involving governments and stakeholder groups, and among different sectors, at global, regional, and national levels, in support of the implement
