Rural Energy for Development
The project (which GEF would help co-finance) is being prepared as an WB/GEFR Strategic Partnership Adaptable Program Loan (APL) to be implemented over a ten year period through an anticipated 3 tranches. It will consist of the investment components described below and will also include significant capacity building and technical assistance.
Pacific Islands Renewable Energy Programme (PIREP)
The proposed PIREP will facilitate the promotion with the Pacific Island Coduntries (PICs) of the widespread implementation and ultimately, commercialization of RE technologies (RETs). The establishment of an enabling environment conducive to the region-wide adoption and commercialization of RETs would involve the design, development and implementation of appropriate policies, strategies and interventions addressing the fiscal, financial, regulatory, market, technical and information barriers to RE development and utilization.
Conservation and Sustainable Utilization of Wild Relatives of Crops (resubmission from Feb 2006 IWP)
The project's objective aims at supporting Chinese Government's plans and programmes to set up protected areas with an integrated and landscape approach and with participation from local communities and various stakeholders, so as to secure the wild relatives of soybean, wheat, and rice, including their natural habitats. In this regard, the project is to bring about best international practices to China for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use.
Electric Cooperative System Loss Reduction Project
The main objective of the proposed GEF Philippines Electric Cooperative System Loss Reduction Project is to achieve significant and sustained energy efficiency improvements in rural ECs in order to provide current and prospective viable EC customers with reliable and least-cost power supply over the long term.
Commercializing Energy Efficiency Finance (CEEF) - Tranche I
The project is a replication of the Hungary Energy Efficiency Co-financing Program. IFC will employ a contingent financing modality which uses GEF resources to leverage IFC and private capital. Under the Project, IFC will provide partial guarantees, and related credit enhancement mechanisms adapted to country market conditions, supporting the financing of energy efficiency (EE) projects by domestic financial institutions (FIs), as well as private project sponsors. IFC will serve as guarantor pursuant to guarantee facility agreements with participating local FIs.
Mekong River Basin Wetland Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Use Program
The project will involve Lao PDR, Cambodia, Thailand (funded through non-GEF sources) and Vietnam, assisting them to conserve and sustainably use biological diversity in the lower Mekong wetlands.
Capacity Building for the Implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety
This proposal presents a general panorama of the medium and long-term elements of a national plan for the implementation of the Cartagena Protocol, with discrete, strategic GEF interventions taking place in the context of a longer-term national effort. Mexico will be responsible for biosafety as an integral part of the national strategy to protect the environemnt without affecting public health.
Consolidation of Ecosystem Management and Biodiversity Conservation of the Bay Islands
The resulting project would assist the Government of Honduras to conserve and sustainable manage key coastal/marine ecosystems in the archipelago of the Bay Islands (islands of Utila, Roatan, Guanaja, and over 60 smaller keys). The archipelago includes a complex marine system exceeding 500 km2 with barrier and firing corals reef formations juxtaposed with extensive sea grass beds and coastal lagoons. The region is of great biological diversity and the project would complement existing GEF investments in the Mesoamerican Barrier reef and the Belize coastal zone management projects..
