Conservation of the Biodiversity of the Paramo in the Northern and Central Andes
The project development objective is to ensure conservation of globally significant biodiversity in the Andean Páramo. This will be achieved by implementing a series of initiatives necessary to create an enabling environment for the improved livelihoods of páramo stakeholders based on the conservation and sustainable use of the ecosystem’s natural resources.
Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions with Bus Rapid Transit
This project seeks to implement a pilot BRT system in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, that will be the first stage of 100Km trunk system that will be the first and most extensive BRT system in Africa. Secondly, the project seeks to implement the first fully developed NMT feeder system as an integral part of the planned 12Km pilot BRT system in Cartagena, Colombia.
Marine Aquarium Market Transformation Initiative (MAMTI)
The project would carry out a range of activities to ensure that the industry is transformed to a principal driver of marine biodiversity conservation, sustainable use, sustainable livelihoods, poverty alleviation and food security for coastal communities in Indonesia and the Philippines.
Protection of the Canary Current Large Marine Ecosystem (LME)
To enable the countries of the Canary Current Large Marine Ecosystem to address priority transboundary concerns on declining fisheries, associated biodiversity and water quality through governance reforms, investments and management programs. The long-term environmental goal of the CCLME program is to reverse the degradation of the Canary Current Large Marine Ecosystem caused by over-fishing, habitat modification and changes in water quality by adoption of an ecosystem-based management approach.
Development and Application of Decision-support Tools to Conserve and Sustainably use Genetic Diversity in Indigenous Livestock and Wild Relatives
The immediate objective of the project is to develop and test tools which can be used in decision-making to support the conservation of indigenous farm animal genetic diversity in developing countries. NOTE: For earlier comments on concept note and PDF-B, please see database entry.
Regional Programme on Electrical Energy Efficiency in Industrial and Commercial Service Sectors in Central America
The main objective of the proposed GEF project is to identify and remove the main barriers that inhibit the implementation of energy efficiency measures in the industrial and commercial service sectors, in order to reduce CO2 emissions and decelerate electricity demand growth, while making the industrial and commercial service sectors more competitive. The focus will be air-conditioning, refrigeration, lighting and motors.
Improved Certification Schemes for Sustainable Tropical Forest Management
The aim of this project is to develop the tools and incentives to help small forest managers, communities and NTFP collectors in the tropics to identify and protect biodiversity in the forests they manage (the 'Target Forests') through certification, whilst continuing to meet their own management objectives. The project will take place in three contrasted tropical countries in order to develop and test the tools in a range of situations.
Strengthening Global Capacity to Sustain Transboundary Waters: The International Waters Learning Exchange and Resource Network (IW:LEARN), Operational Phase
The overall objective of this project is to improve the management of transboundary water systems by increasing the capacity to identify, disseminate and replicate best practices and lessons learned across the GEF IW projects. This objective will be achieved through a suite of learning exchanges, knowledge sharing activities, joint demonstration activities, and related capacity building Information Communication Technologies (ICT) activities among GEF supported IW projects and their partners.
Prevention and Control of Dust and Sandstorms in Northeast Asia
This project will promote establishment of a regional cooperation mechanism to facilitate the cooperation and coordination of the interventions by the major stakeholders in Northeast Asia (the region) to address the transboundary environmental problem of dust and sandstorm (DSS), thus supplementing and maximizing the effects of the efforts undertaken by the governments of PRC and Mongolia under their respective national action programs to combat desertification under the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.
Protection of the North West Sahara Aquifer System (NWSAS) and related humid zones and ecosystems
The project for the Transboundary Aquifer System of the Northern Sahara (Algeria, Libya and Tunisia) has as its objective the protection of this critical resource, and in particular of the recharge areas and humid zones and ecosystems related to the aquifer. It includes two complementary components: (I) improving the knowledge of the aquifer and related ecosystems and (ii) implementing a consultation mechanism at the hydrogeologic basin level.
