Support for the Implementation of the Uganda National Biosafety Framework (NBF) within the context of the Cartagena protocol
The overall objectives of this demonstraton project on biosafety is to provide support to strengthen capacity building for the implementation of national biosafety framework in compliance with the obligations of the Cartagena Protocol. Three areas of capacity building needs were identified through the first phase pilot project on biosafety: capacity building in biosafety regulation, scientific capacity building in biosafety, and biosafety enforcement and monitoring capacity building.
Millennium Ecosystem Assesment
GEF funding will catalyze global, regional, national and local action to conduct a Global Ecosystem Assessment to help bring the best available information and knowledge on ecosystem goods and services to bear on policy and management decisions. It will also build the capacity at all levels to undertake integrated ecosystem assessments and to act on their findings. Through this process, the project will provide an accurate description of the current extent, trends, pressures, conditions and value of different ecosystems of the world, establishing a clear baseline for the year 2000.
Assessment of Capacity Needs for the Implementation of the Congo's National Biodiversity Strategy and Strengthening of Clearing House Mechanism (add on)
The additional funding requested will provide support for the assessment of capacity-building needs for priorities selected during formulation of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan and to implement a country driven CHM project. It is aimed, therefore, at creating favourable conditions for the implementation of strategies in the area of biodiversity.
EcoEnterprises Fund
The objective of this project is to abate threats to biodiversity conservation in Latin America and the Caribbean by creating economic incentives to protect critical natural resources.
Climate, Water and Agriculture: Impacts on and Adaptation of Agro-Ecological Systems in Africa
The main goal of the proposed project is to develop multipliable analytical methods and procedures for assessing the impact of climate change on agriculture in Africa, to estimate how climate affects the current agricultural system, and to project how climate change might affect this system in the future. The project intends to develop suitable plans for adaptation, working closely with policy makers in the interpretation process. The analysis will compare farmer decisions and outcomes in one climate zone against choices farmers make in other zones.
Rio de Janeiro Integrated Ecosystem Management in Production Landscapes of the North-Northwestern Fluminense
The national objective of the proposed project is to increase and sustain smallholder agricultural production, productivity and farm incomes and assist in the sustainable use of natural resources, by promoting the adoption of sustainable land and water management, at the microcatchment level, with full involvement of the farming community. The global objectives are threefold: (i) to address threats to biodiversity of global importance, (ii) enhance carbon sequestration in the agricultural landscape, and (iii) reverse land degradation in public and/or fragile lands..
Assessment of Soil Organic Carbon Stocks and Change at National Scales
To improve national assessment methodologies relating to land use options and UNFCCC requirements, and to support core activities of the GEF Integrated Ecosystem Management Operational Programme and IPCC by developing and demonstrating generic tools which quantify the impact of land management and climate scenarios on carbon sequestration in soils.
Reducing Transboundary Degradation in the Kura-Aras Basin
To create an enabling framework for the long-term, sustainable integrated management of the Kura-Aras River Basin following IWRM principles and avoid overuse and conflicting uses of water resources.
