Barriers and Best Practices in Integrated Management of Mountain Ecosystems
The overall objective of the project is to assist developing countries to promote and enhance the protection and sustainable development of the mountains and their resources globally, as a contribution to the International Year of Mountains, WSSD and BGMS. Through collaboration among GEF implementing agencies and other partners this MSP will identify best practice in GEF and non-GEF projects dealing with biodiversity, climate change, and international waters in the context of integrated management of mountain ecosystems.

The objective of the project is to create sustainable capacity in and ownership by the Government of Kazakhstan to meet its obligations under the Stockholm Convention, including initial preparation of POPs Implementation Plan, as wella s broader issues of chemical safety and management as articulated in Chapter 19 of Agenda 21. The implementation plan will describe how the govewrnment will meet its obligations under the convention to phase out POPs sources and remediate POPs contaminated sites in Kazakhstan.
Integrated Management of Dryland Biodiversity through Land Rehabilitation in the Arid and Semi-Arid Regions of Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe
The overall objectives of the project are to: (a) conserve the arid land adapted animal and plant biodiversity of the transboundary range and grazing lands common to Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe by improving community-based resource management; and (b) improve the quality of rural livelihoods through diversified and sustainable natural resource use and biodiversity protection.
Development of a Wetland Site and Flyway Network for Conservation of the Siberian Crane and Other Migratory Waterbirds in Asia
The objective of the project is to conserve the network of critical wetlands needed for survival of the Siberian Cranes, other threatened cranes, and numerous water birds that form an important resource for local populations. The project focuses on the conservation of the international network of wetlands upon which this species depends, together with a wide range of other wetland biodiversity. Nearly fifty percent of these wetlands are Ramsar sites.
Integrated Ecosystem Management in Namibia through the National Conservancy Network
The project aims to conserve , manage and utilize the globally important vast and diverse but fragile biological diversity found within Namibia for improved rural and sustainable economic development, through participatory, integrated and innovative management approaches. This will be achieved through enhancing the capacity of Namibia's National Conservancy Program to support the establishment and operation of self sustaning conservancies and other legally recognized entities.
Community-based Integrated Ecosytem Management Program under the Community Action Program
The proposed CBIEM aims at supporting sustainable local development by providing communities in Niger with the means to improve the management of rural and peri-urban ecosystems so as to generate both local and global environmental benefits. It is an attempt to reduce poverty and vulnerability by combating land degradation and desertification in Niger and by conserving and eventually restoring ecological mechanisms.
