Developing a Model Conservation Programme-Conservation of the Gobi Desert Using Wild Bactrian Camels as an "Umbrella Species".
Goal: To ensure the long-term conservation of the Great Gobi ecosystem and the keystone species it supports through improving participation of local communities in the management of the Special Protected Area (SPA). Objectives: The project has 3 main objectives:1Strengthen the management of the Great Gobi SPA.2Improve the stewardship of the buffer zone areas.3Develop and implement targeted responses for the cross-cutting issues of, overgrazing and range deterioration; over-collection of Saxual bushes and downy poplars; declining water resources.
Northern Savanna Biodiversity Conservation (NSBC) Project
In Ghana, as elsewhere in Africa, savanna woodlands provide valuable environmental services, are a crucial refuge for native biodiversity, and also protect soil and water resources against degradation. About 70% of Ghana’s total supply of firewood and charcoal, estimated at 16 million m3, comes from savanna zones, which also provide medicinal plants (the primary source of healthcare to residents) roofing grasses, fencing poles, bush meat and fruits. The northern savannas are a source of important farmer crop varieties (cereals, roots/tubers and legumes).
Integrated Natural Resources and Biodiversity Management
The objective of the project is to promote the adoption of integrated production systems in agricultural and livestock landscapes to increase productivity within a context of holistic ecosystem and natural resources management while conserving soils, water, grasslands, and biodiversity. IBRD will finance the productive and competitive components related to agriculture and livestock. The GEF component will finance the incremental costs required to restore or improve the capacity of the productive rural landscape to maintain ecological processes and conserve biodiversity.
Geothermal Energy Development Program , GeoFund
The Strategic Partnership for Geothermal Energy Development is designed with the goal to systematically promote the use of geothermal energy in the ECA Region through assistance in barrier removal, provision of financial support, and capacity building. Partners will be the participating countries in the ECA Region, the World Bank and GEF, International Financial Institutions (IFIs) such as EBRD and other financial institutions focusing on ECA Countries, UNDP and UNEP, as well as multilateral and bilateral donors. The Partnership will be open to any of the ECA Countries.
Towards a Convention and Action Programme for the Protection of the Caspian Sea Environment
The primary objective of this GEF project is consolidation and preliminary implementation of the SAP of the Caspian Sea. The TDA team identified five Environmental Quality Objectives (EQOs), which represented the region’s long-term vision for the Caspian. Against each EQO a set of targets (with timelines) was then agreed in order to achieve the objective, and for each target a listing of required baseline and incremental interventions was developed.
Enabling Activities to Facilitate Early Action on the Implementation of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in the Republic of Bolivia
The objective of this enabling activities proposal is to develop and formulate a National Implementation Plan (NIP) and thereby strengthen national capacity and enhance knowledge and understanding amongst decision makers, managers, the industry, and the public at large on POPs. By achieving this objective the Republic of Bolivia will be prepared and enabled to meet the obligations of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.
Barrier Removal to Encourage and Secure Market Transformation and Labeling of Refrigerators
In addressing institutional, technical, information, capacity and market barriers, the project would ensure that energy efficiency and consumption labels are developed and adopted by all local refrigerator manufacturers (who supply 95% of the Tunisian market needs), thereby guaranteeing consumer awareness of the consumption and economic perspective of purchasing any potential unit. The project will also ensure an effective testing, monitoring and enforcement capacity in the country to achieve compliance with labeling standards and requirements.
Lop Nur Nature Sanctuary Biodiversity Conservation
The Lop Nur region of Gashun Gobi desert, formerly a nuclear testing site, was recently declared by the Chinese Government as a Nature Sanctuary. The Lop Nur Sanctuary is home to the last surviving genetically pure herd of wild Bactrian camels (Camelus bactrianus ferus) in the world. With the cessation of nuclear testing, it was critical that the area be granted protected status to prevent damaging human encroachment of this unique Central Asian dry-land ecosystem, especially by illegal miners and hunters, the most serious threats to the wild camel’s survival.
Preparation of A Strategic Action Programme (SAP) for the Dnieper River Basin and Development of SAP Implementation Mechanisms
The long-term objectives of the project are to remedy the serious environmental effects of pollution and habitat degradation in the Dnieper River Basin, to ensure sustainable use of its resources, and to protect biodiversity in the basin. This will be catalyzed through the development of both a regional Strategic Action Programme (SAP) as well as individual National Action Programmes (NAP) outlining country and donor commitments to baseline and additional preventive and remedial actions on behalf of the basin. The implementation of incremental (e.g.
Renewable Energy for Agriculture
The project will address initial investment cost barriers, information and institutional constraints currently preventing their widespread use. Specifically the project will support the following activities: Development of a market promotion strategy, promotion campaigns, innovative vendor financing/leasing programs (demonstrations), product certification. The investment demonstration component of the GEF project will address initial investment cost barriers and related risk perceptions both at the vendor and the rural client level.
