Removal of Barriers to Energy Conservation and Energy Efficiency in Small and Medium Scale Enterprises
The outcome of this project will be a reduction of CO2 emissions resulting from increased energy efficiency within Kenya’s small and medium scale enterprises. This will be accomplished by removing capacity and financial barriers through formal and on the job training as well as through the introduction of new financial mechanisms. A series of demonstration retrofit projects will be carefully selected, and financing obtained to complete the energy efficiency demonstrations.
Implementation of the Strategic Action Programme (SAP) of the Pacific Small Island Developing States
The long-term objective of this project is to conserve and sustainably manage the coastal and ocean resources in the Pacific Region. Project activities are designed to encourage comprehensive, cross-sectoral, ecosystem based approaches to mitigate and prevent existing imminent threats to International Waters. The SAP provides a regional framework within which actions are identified, developed and implemented. Targeted actions will be carried out in two complementary, linked consultative contexts: Integrated Coastal and Watershed Management (ICWM) and Oceanic Fisheries Management (OFM).
Biodiversity and Protected Area Management Pilot Project for the Virachey National Park
The development and global objective of this pilot project is to support proactive measures to minimize illegal exploitation or degradation of the relatively intact biodiversity of national and global significance in the Virachey National park. Project support would comprise two key elements – capacity building and park management.
Removal of Barriers to the Effective Implementation of Ballast Water Control and Management Measures in Developing Countries
The long-term objective of this project is to assist developing countries in reducing the transfer of harmful organisms from ship ballast water. The project will increase the extent to which ships calling on developing country ports adhere to the at present voluntary international Guidelines of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Further, it will assist developing countries in the development of programs necessary to implement the expected IMO international regulatory framework most likely through a ballast water annex to the MARPOL Convention or through a separate Convention.
Conservation of Globally Significant Forest Ecosystems in Suriname’s Guayana Shield
The project would contribute to institutional learning in the conservation arena by operationalizing protected area management in 2 key globally important and representative sites, namely the Central Suriname Nature Reserve (CSNR), the single largest tropical forest reserve in the Guayana Shield, and the Sipaliwini Nature Reserve (SNR) in south Suriname.
Landfill Methane Recovery Demonstration Project
The project aims to demonstrate self-sustaining modern waste management of municipal solid waste through maximum collection of generated methane, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating a revenue stream to cover capital costs and operational costs. The project would demonstrate the feasibilty of developing indigenous landfill gas as an energy source, utilizing an otherwise constant emission of methane into the atmosphere and partially substituting a renewable energy source for imported fossils fuels for electricity generation in Montevideo.
Southern Africa Biodiversity Support Programme
The project will involve all ten countries of the southern African region in a collaborative programme of activities related to national implementation of the CBD. The project is designed to improve cooperation and to build capacity both within and between participating nations and to integrate sustainable use into biodiversity conservation and other sectoral programmes. The project will produce five key outputs, each arising from a series of targeted activities.
Zakopane/Podhale Geothermal District Heating and Environment Project
With the objective of reducing greenhouse gases, the proposed Project would assist the Government in exploiting developing the countries geothermal resources to establish in the Podhale region of Southern Poland a new district heating system with supplementary gas-fired peaking capacity.
Agricultural Research, Extension, Training (ARET) Project
The overall development objective of the Project is to increase agricultural production sustainably, while reducing pollution of natural resources. It represents the first phase of a ten-year Program, to be implemented in three phases, for the reform of on-farm agricultural and environmental practices.
