The Role of the Coastal Ocean in the Disturbed and Undisturbed Nutrient and Carbon Cycles
The proposed project deals with understanding the role of coastal seas in the carbon cycle and the impact of eutrophication in carbon sequestration. The emphasis of the project is on gathering a significant number of empiric estimates through workshops and training on the use of simple models in developing countries. This effort will produce preliminary conclusions on the role of anthropogenic impacts on the carbon source/sink characteristics using exemplary cases.
Kopacki Rit Wetlands Management Project
Under the GEF alternative, an expanded program would be implemented focusing on alternatives that generate global benefits. Monitoring System for the Galapagos Islands
Establishing a monitoring system to measure the well-being of the ecosystems of the Galapagos Islands
Management of Avian Ecosystems
The project will assist Seychelles to improve the conservation status of threatened endemic birds, their ecosystem and associated biodiversity through the establishment of a program of species and habitat restoration. Human impacts in Seychelles, as in other island ecosystems, have led to the extinction of many endemic taxa and reduced much of the remaining taxa to endangered relic populations.
Promotion of Biodiversity Conservation within Coffee Landscapes
The project seeks to conserve critical biodiversity in El Salvador through the maintenance and enhancement of habitats within shade-coffee plantations. Specific outcomes sought include: (a) increase the extent of coffee plantations under biodiversity-friendly shade regimes to serve as habitats for globally significant biodiversity; (b) initiate the establishment of biological corridors composed of shade coffee plantations; and (c) promote the development of a "biodiversity-friendly" coffee production system in El Salvador, along with its certification and marketing abroad.
Off-grid Electrification Pilot Demonstration, A Component of the Laos Southern Provinces Rural Electrification
This project is designed to encourage integration of renewable energy into the government’s national electrification program, and to respond to Operational Program No.6, promoting adoption of renewable energy by removing barriers and reducing implementation costs. The pilot renewable energy schemes include six micro-hydro installations and 20 solar battery charging stations.
Rescue Plan for the Cap Blanc Colony of the Mediterranean Monk Seal
The project intends to facilitate efforts in the recovery of the depleted and endangered Mediterranean Monk Seal and will implement the Rescue Plan for the Cap Blanc colony of the Mediterrean Monk Seal.
A Participatory Approach to Managing the Environment: An Input to the Inter-American Strategy for Participation (ISP)
The project aims to build capacity within the countries of the Americas for the successful incorporation of public participation practices in sustainable development policy formulation and decision-making; to design mechanisms to improve communication and promote partnership among governments (national and local), nongovernmental organizations, community and local groups, the private sector, and academic organizations in these matters; and to provide technical assistance for exchanging information and developing methodologies for conflict resolution and consensus building.
