Integrated Management of Peatlands for Biodiversity and Climate Change: The Potential of Managing Peatlands for Carbon Accumulation While Protecting Biodiversity
This proposed project is a targeted-research-project and will investigate techniques for conserving peatland areas to facilitate carbon accumulation while at the same time maintaining or enhancing their biodiversity. The objective of the project will be to address the capability of peatlands to act as significant carbon deposits, and provide recommendations on how these areas could be managed to ensure this attribute is maintained and even improved while protecting biodiversity.

Within the overall objective of the Stockholm Convention, which is to protect human health and the environment from POPs, the project will: i.Prepare the ground for implementation of the Convention in Sri Lanka; ii.Assist Sri Lanka in meeting its reporting and other obligations under the Convention; iii.Strengthen Country’s national capacity to manage POPs and chemicals generally.
Initial Assistance to Colombia to Meet its Obligations Under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)
The objectives of the project are: (i) to prepare a National Implementation Plan (NIP); (ii) to build capacity support for Enabling Activities; and (iii) to help develop indicators for incremental costs through the application and test of techniques for cleaning POPs-contaminated sites. The project will help develop and implement priority policy and regulatory reform, capacity building and investment programs as mandated by the Convention.
