Removing Obstacles to Direct Private-Sector Participation in In-situ Biodiversity Conservation
The objective of this project is to facilitate the development of private conservation initiatives that will contribute to globally-significant biodiversity conservation in high-priority eco-regions. This will be done through strengthening the regulatory and incentives framework, testing innovative conservation initiatives on four pilot sites, strengthening the technical capacity of private landowners, and disseminating the lessons learned throughout Bolivia and Latin America.
Amazon Region Protected Areas Program (ARPA)
Project would support expansion and consolidation of strict protected areas in the Amazonian region. Three specific objectives have been identified: (i) identify and create new strict protected areas; (ii) effective establishment of these new areas; and (iii) develop long-term sustainable management tools and mechanisms for effective protection within all Amazonian strict protected areas. The project emerges from a GOB commitment to expand effective strict protection in the Amazon to cover at least 10% (37 million ha) of the biome (370 million ha).
Towards a Lake Basin Management Initiative and a Contribution to the Third World Water Forum: Sharing Experiences and Early Lessons in GEF and non-GEF Lake Basin Management Projects
The general objective is to improve lake and reservoir basin management. The project will assess and draw lessons from the achievements and implementation of several GEF and non-GEF projects. Particular objectives will be to: ·facilitate the sharing of experiences between managers and stakeholders; ·accelerate learning and implementation of effective lake and reservoir basin management and report to the 3rd World Water Forum
Assessment of Capacity Building Needs and Country-specific Priorities in Biodiversity Including Clearing House Mechanism (add on)
To assist the Government of Kiribati in assessing capacity building needs for specific priorities necessary to protect national biodiversity in accordance with the NBSAP recommendations and the GEF and CoP/CBD guidelines, and to implement a country-driven CHM project.
Conservation of Priority Protected Areas
Support for government efforts to establish a core National Integrated Protected Area System (NIPAS) for ten sites over a seven year period, through financing site development and resource management. The project promotes participation of local communities in site management, and strengthens national capacity for coordination and monitoring.
Szombathely CHP/Biomass Project
The main purpose of this project is to decrease harmful emissions of greenhouse gasses in ways that deliver economically competitive heat supplies to a major portion of Szombathely and competitively priced electricity to the grid. Additional project objectives are to strengthen rural employment and incomes through increased beneficial usage of wood; and to demonstrate the technical feasibility of wood-firing for district heating coupled with electric production using gas motors.
