Costa Rica aims to transition towards an urban green economy with GEF support
The Global Environment Facility is investing in the project "Transitioning to an urban green economy and delivering global environmental benefits," led by the Costa Rican Ministry of Environment and Energy and implemented by UNDP in partnership with the Organization for Tropical Studies.
The project aims to decarbonize the Greater Metropolitan Area through sustainable integrated urban planning.

Ecuador announces creation of Hermandad Marine Reserve off Galapagos
“Ecuador is proud to announce the creation of the Hermandad Marine Reserve in the coming days,” the country’s president wrote in an opinion piece shared with Mongabay.
His country had initially announced the expansion of the marine reserve encircling the Galápagos Islands in November at the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland.

Building on the GEF-6 phase, the Sustainable Cities Impact Program in GEF-7 (2018-2022), under its brand name UrbanShift, advances the integrated approach of urban planning and implementation. The program brings together global, national, and local stakeholders to work towards a common vision of sustainable, low carbon, inclusive, gender sensitive, and resilient development, and is supporting 23 cities in nine countries.
