The Congo Basin is critical to the health of our planet
Lowland and swamp forests, forest savannas, and the mighty Congo river make up the 500 million acres of the Congo Basin, the second largest tropical rainforest on the planet. When standing below the trees, the vaulted canopy of leaves blocks out most of the sunlight and traps moisture making a trek along the forest floor dark as night, and very wet.
Financing environmental priorities: how recipient countries are taking center stage in delivering GEF-7 strategy
Inclusive dialogue with stakeholders is increasing country ownership and helping to enhance the impact of programming in GEF’s new four-year funding cycle, known as GEF-7.
Countries gather to tackle mercury pollution
The second meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury (COP2) opens today in Geneva, Switzerland. The Minamata Convention, the newest multilateral environmental agreement, was adopted in 2013 in Kumamoto, Japan and entered into force in August, 2017. Supporting innovation for transformation: GEF’s new Impact Programs to tackle the drivers of environmental degradation in an integrated way
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) faces a demanding yet seemingly attainable task: to help countries foster a transformation in how individuals, communities, and businesses use and protect the natural word. But nothing less will suffice if we are to meet pressing environmental challenges and safeguard the global commons.
Zero Hunger world is within reach, but we must work together to achieve it
Today, on World Food Day, the global community is mobilizing to reach a Zero Hunger world. With a changing climate, inequality, and rapid population growth the challenges we face on the way seem insurmountable. However, with governments, private sector and individuals working together, we can achieve a world with enough food and water for everyone in a way that does not pollute rivers, turn forests into grazing fields, increase CO2 emissions, and cause species to go extinct.
Global business, government and agricultural leaders announce land-focused commitments to mitigate climate change
Organizations from across sectors embrace land as a climate solution during the Global Climate Action Summit.
The GEF is becoming a leading champion for sustainable cities, and that matters
This autumn, the IPCC will publish its much-awaited special report on global warming of 1.5 degrees centigrade. For the first time, the world will have a clear scientific view of the rate and scale of emissions reduction is required if we are to avoid runaway climate change. It is expected to set out the systemic change needed to avoid the associated sea level rise, extreme weather, shocks to our food supplies and water, and setbacks in living standards if we fail to constrain atmospheric pollution.
Cities are one of the systems that need to be transformed.
GEF introduces impact programs to upscale landscape restoration
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has been working for over 25 years to help mitigate climate change, halt biodiversity loss and combat land degradation. The nexus between these three goals across globally important landscapes present a key opportunity to achieve them in a synergistic way through the generation of global environmental benefits across all these dimensions.
The GEF Gender Partnership: Building the foundation for a gender-responsive environmental agenda
From July 25-27, the GEF Gender Partnership gathered experts from thirty international and civil society organizations to provide ideas on how to mainstream gender into GEF-7 programming. It also provided feedback on the forthcoming policy on Gender Equality which tries to maximize opportunities for promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment in its programs and projects.
