Paraguayan Wildlands Protection Initiative
The project would address conservation and sustainable use issues in the la Plata Basin which is endowed with biological diversity of global significance, including several endemic species. The project would assist key stakeholders to strengthen the institutional framework and to establish the necessary structures to conserve and sustainably manage priority biological diversity. The project would also enable Paraguay manage its national biological stock in a more integrated and holistic way.
In-Situ Conservation of Native Cultivars and Their Wild Relatives
The long-term goal of this project is the conservation of agrobiodiversity in Peru, one of the world’s most important centers of origin of crop and plant genetic diversity. This project will target 11 important crop species, including several local varieties and wild relatives, for conservation of their genetic diversity within functioning agroecosystems.
Decentralized Rural Energy Project
The project will promote the adoption of renewable energy by privately-owned and operated solar photovoltaic equipment supply and service operations. Barrier removal activities will address: insufficient information about the real PV market; high risk for rural credit providers; limited technological know-how and institutional capacity; and inadequate regulations.
Integrated Watershed Management Program for the Pantanal and Upper Paraguay River Basin
This project catalyzes implementation of a detailed watershed management program for the Pantanal and the Upper Paraguay River Basin. Project activities will enhance and restore the environmental functioning of the system; provide protection to endemic species within the wetland; and implement strategic activities, identified in the World Bank-financed PCBAP program, that address the root causes of degradation.
Integrated Management of Land-Based Activities in the Sao Francisco Basin
This project develops a watershed management program for the Rio Sao Francisco Basin, which discharges into the South West Atlantic Large Marine Ecosystem and Brazil Current. The strategic, integrated and sustainable program for the management of this system and its coastal zone to be formulated during this project will address the physical, biological, chemical and institutional root causes of the progressive degradation which is affecting the basin and, particularly, the coastal ecosystems.
Rural Environmental Project
The global objective of the project is to improve the quality of the water of the Baltic Sea by decreasing non-point sources of nutrient pollution from agriculture. The Baltic Sea Strategic Action Plan estimates that 30-40% of the nitrogen and 10% of the phosphorous entering the Sea come from agriculture, and the eutrophic conditions they cause represent the Baltic Sea’s top priority transboundary water problem. The project will help Polish small farmers to adopt innovative waste management techniques and land use practices to reduce pollution releases.
Western Indian Ocean Islands Oil Spill Contingency Planning
PDF funded a joint petroleum industry/government planning seminar, and associated follow-up work to prepare a project designing national and sub-regional contingency plans for oil spill containment and treatment to respond to spills of differing size, location and degree of threat; provision of basic training and equipment to execute plans at the national and sub-regional levels; design of mechanisms to ensure financial and operational sustainability.
Wetland Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Use
The Biodiversity Conservation Action Plan, Agenda 21 and the draft National Wetland Conservation Action Plan provide the foundation for the conservation and better management of China’s wetland resources. However, barriers to effective conservation of global wetland biodiversity remain.
Maluku Conservation and Natural Resources Management
The project is located on and around four biologically-rich islands in the province of Maluku in eastern Indonesia. Home to a rich mixture of flora, fauna and marine species, Maluku has just one terrestrial and one marine protected area, which are poorly managed and under threat.
Aquatic Biodiversity Conservation
In this project, the GEF aims at financing the incremental costs of promoting wetlands and aquatic biodiversity conservation and sustainable use in Bangladesh. It will do so by complementing the IV IDA's Fisheries Project. The GEF approach relies on removing barriers for successful mainstreaming of aquatic biodiversity and wetlands conservation within the fisheries sector through demonstration, capacity building, enhancement of the information base for sound decision making, incentive development, and policy development.
