Formulation of a National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA) for Solomon Islands
The objective of the proposed NAPA formulation project is to develop a plan of action that will serve as the blueprint for the country’s adaptation to climate change and climate variability. The ultimate goal of the NAPA is the reduction of the country’s vulnerability to climate change.
Improvement of DDT-based production of Dicofol and introduction of alternative technologies including IPM for leaf mites control in China
[From Oct 2004 submission: China uses DDT as intermediate for the production of Dicofol, an organochlorine used as miticide for a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and crops. This usage of DDT - an accepted specific exemption under the SC - presently leads to Dicofol with 10% DDT as "impurity". Clearly unacceptably high, and not in line with the international standard adopted by China in 2003 of 0.1 %. Dicofol itself is not without risk. Its close structural relationship with DDT explains that it is toxic, rather persistent and bioaccumulative, and a suspected endocrine disruptor.
Wildlands Protection and Management
Development and implementation of management programs for five tropical forest ecosystems in the Congo, representative of the country's great ecological diversity and wealth. To achieve this objective, the project funds biodiversity inventories, the preparation of natural resource management plans for each site, training of supervisory staff and guards, and studies of the impact of the indigenous people on the environment and of how negative impacts can be mitigated.
Sustainable Use of Biodiversity in the Western Slope of the Serrania del Baudo
The objective of the project is the development of a strategy for the sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity with the participation of local communities and administrations. The project supports dialogue and lays the basis for a more environmentally grounded development plan for the refion given that the recently proposed development programs fro the region have presented conceptual and methodological differences in approach with respect to the cultural systems of its inhabitants and to their relationship with the natural environment.
Conservation of Biodiversity and Sustainable Development in La Amistad and Osa Conservation Areas
Assistance to National System of Conservation Areas to develop means of sustainable revenue generation from eco-tourism and other biodiversity -based initiatives. Project emphasizes creation of local benefits from conservation as well as involvement of community groups and indegenous peoples.
A Dynamic Farmer-Based Approach to the Conservation of African Plant Genetic Resources
This is a biodiversity conservation project which addresses a neglected aspect of plant diversity, that of indigenous crop varieties maintained by farmers in dynamic agro-ecosystems such as those found in Ethiopia. Efforts to conserve crop diversity to-date have focused on maintaining genetic diversity in static ex situ gene banks. This has arrested the complex interaction of genetically diverse traditional varieties (landraces) with their associated pests, predators and pathogens.
Programme for Sustainable Forestry (Iwokrama Rain Forest Programme)
In a relatively intact rain forest, an international consortium is developing replicable demonstration projects leading to guidelines for sustainable utilization of tropical forests. Activities include research, detailed inventory of species, fellowship for training in environmental management, training of forest rangers, and establishment of local study centre.
Kerinci Seblat Integrated Conservation and Development
The project will secure the future of Kerinci-Seblat National Park (KSNP) by integrating park management and conservation with local and regional development. Park mgt./protection will be strengthened, based on collaborative linkages with buffer-zone communities, and local NGOs and govts. The project will stabilize land use outside KSNP by promoting activities consistent with park conservation objectives, and by improving local land use to relieve pressure on KSNP. Biodiversity assessments in forest concessions surrounding the park will assist better mgt.
Conservation of the Dana and Azraq Protected Areas
The project provides support for environmental management at two key protected areas and enables RSCN (NGO) to initiate similar initiatives elsewhere in the country and to provide environmental education to all segments of Jordanian society. The World Bank is involved as cooperation agency in Dana portion of project.
Tana River National Primate Reserve Conservation Project
Development and implementation of a management plan for the Tana River National Primate Reserve, which contains the last remaining contiguous area of indigenous riverine forest along the Tana River. The Tana Reserve protects two endangered primate species, the Red Colobus and Crested Mangabey monkeys.
