Climate Change Mitigation in Ukraine Through Energy Efficiency in Municipal District Heating (Pilot Project in Rivne) Stage 1
The proposed project addresses a key issue in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through large-scale improvements in energy efficiency in Ukraine's communal heat supply sector.
Fuel Cell Bus Demonstration Project in Cairo, Phase I
This project, Part I of a two-part project, proposes a five-year demonstration program to operate eight fuel cell buses (FCBs) for public transport in Cairo under actual revenue service conditions. The major objective is to introduce this zero emission bus technology in Egypt as a long-term solution to the severe urban transport pollution problem in Cairo and to reduce global GHG emission.
Western Altiplano Integrated Natural Resources Management
The project development objective is to enhance the sustainability of rural livelihoods by promoting more sustainable productive agriculture and by improved management and conservation of natural resources (soils, forests, water, and biodiversity) of the Western Altiplano.
Environmental Protection and Maritime Transport Pollution Control in the Gulf of Honduras
The overall objective of the project is to enhance the control and prevention of maritime transport related pollution in the major ports, navigational transport routes and adjacent coastal and marine areas within the Gulf of Honduras. This effort will be an important contribution to the environmental management of an area of significant ecological and economic value. As such, it is designed to complement a parallel regional initiative for the conservation and sustainable use of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System (MBRS).
Systems Efficiency Improvement, Equitization and Renewables (SEER) Project - Renewables Components
The project will support a long-term programmatic approach to develop renewable energy according to the country’s Renewable Energy Action Plan. The project supports Phase I of the REAP, building renewable energy awareness, demand, and capacity.
End Use Energy Efficiency Project
The Chinese government is embarking upon a long-term program to support energy efficiency in the industrial and building sectors. This project supports the first phase (3 years) of that program. The project’s purpose is the removal of barriers to the widespread application and practice of energy conservation and energy efficiency in the major energy consuming sectors (buildings and industrial) in China.
Strengthening the National System of Protected Areas
The objective of the full project is to conserve highly representative assemblages of four of Cuba's terrestrial ecoregions of global importance and classified as highest priority for conservation nationally and regionally. The Cuban archipelago harbors the greatest biological diversity in the Caribbean region. Given its insularities and threats, biodiversity conservation faces serious threats.
Securing the Environment for Economic Development (SEED)
SEED-Biodiversity will contribute to and catalyze SEED-Tourism initiatives to secure the management and conservation of Critical Species and Habitats (IUCN, 1990) that are of key significance to global biodiversity and to Zambia’s economic development. These initiatives will in turn help to mitigate the root cause of biodiversity loss in Zambia - poverty.
Groundwater and Drought Management in SADC
The objective of the project is for the SADC member states to develop cooperatively a strategic regional approach to support and enhance the capacity of its member States in the definition of drought management policies, specifically in relation to the role, availability (magnitude and recharge) and supply potential of groundwater resources. This will assist in reconciling the demands for socio-economic development and those of the principal groundwater-dependent ecosystems.
Integrated Management of Critical Ecosystems
The objective of the proposed GEF component of the Rural Sector Support Project (IDA), which will be financed through an Adjustable Programme Loan (APL), is to cover the incremental costs associated with the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in critical upland watersheds and wetlands of international significance in Rwanda. This would be achieved through the promotion of integrated approaches to the management of critical ecosystems.
