Promoting Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainble Use in the Frontier Forests of Northwestern Mato Grosso
The long-term goal of this project is the consolidation in northwest Mato Grosso (an area comparable in size to Panama) of an integrated matrix of different land uses consisting of contiguous blocks of intact primary forest cover on private lands, corridors of secondary regeneration and more intensive agrosilvopastoral systems and permanent forest management. The project will demonstrate a widely replicable, integrated approach to the protection and sustainable use of biodiversity on private lands.
West Java/Jakarta Environmental Management Project
The project will reduce methane gas emissions from municipal solid waste by aerobically composition municipal waste as an alternative to landfill dumping.
Methane Capture and Use (Landfill Demonstration Project
The proposed Methane Gas Capture Project would provide support to an existing project on solid waste management (Second Solid Waste Management Project [Ln. 3752-ME]) to enable the internalization of the global dimension of landfill gas capture and use. Specifically, the GEF support would be used to provide the financial and technical assistance required to demonstrate self-sustaining modern waste management of municipal solid waste that includes capture and use of landfill gas.
Implementation of Strategic Action Program for the Bermejo River Binational Basin: Phase II
This project catalyzes the implementation of the Strategic Action Program for the Bermejo River Binational Basin.
Coastal Contamination Prevention and Sustainable Fisheries Management
The project objectives are to promote the conservation of biodiversity along the Patagonia coastline and to protect the Patagonia Shelf large marine ecosystem through the prevention and mitigation of coastal pollution and the sustainable management of fisheries resources.
Solar and Wind Energy Resource Assessment
This project will provide solar and wind resource data and geographic information assessment tools to public and private sector executives who are involved in energy market development. It will demonstrate the use of these instruments in investment and policy decision making and build local capacities for their continuous use. The project will enable private investors and public policy makers to assess the technical, economic and environmental potential for large-scale investments in technologies that enable the exploitation of two increasingly important sources of renewable energy.
Enabling China to Prepare Initial National Communication to the UNFCCC
The principal aim of the project is to enable China to comply with her obligations related to Article 4.1, and other relevant commitments, specified in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), including submission of her Initial National Communication. The aims of the project are therefore to generate, analyze and communicate information relevant to the preparation and submission of China’s Initial National Communication (particularly in accord with Art. 4.1 and Art.
Biodiversity Conservation in the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve
The project will promote biodiversity conservation in the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve. Among the protected areas in Mexico, the Sierra Gorda has the highest degree of biodiversity, due to great altitudinal variations and a heterogeneous rain pattern. It harbours a total of 14 vegetation types, several of global importance, with high levels of species endemism, presence of charismatic species and the unique representation of a transition zone between two bio-geographic regions.
Coral Reef Targeted Research and Capacity Building for Management
This project proposes to conduct specific, targeted research to fill critically important information gaps in the fundamental understanding of coral reef ecosystems so that management and policy interventions can be strengthened globally. The purpose of the targeted research is to test specific hypotheses related to major human and natural factors threatening coral reef health.
Biodiversity Conservation in the Lower Dniester Delta Ecosystem
The project would assist the Government of Moldova and Biotica, an NGO, to improve wetland protection and management in the Lower Dniester Ecosystem. The area has been identified as a national priority and the project will assist in expanding the area under strict protection from 500 ha to 5000 ha under the category of National Park.
