Mainstreaming Conservation of Migratory Soaring Birds into Key Productive Sectors along the Rift Valley/Red Sea Flyway (Tranches 1 and 2)
September 8 Summary of Project The Rift Valley/Red Sea flyway is the second most important flyway for migratory soaring birds (raptors, storks, pelicans and some ibis) in the world, with over 1.5 million birds of 39 species, including 6 globally threatened species, using this corridor between their breeding grounds in Europe and West Asia and wintering areas in Africa each year.

Danube/Black Sea Strategic Partnership - Nutrient Reduction Investment Fund: Tranche 2
1.The GEF World Bank Investment Fund (IF) is the investment arm of the GEF Strategic Partnership on the Black Sea/Danube Basin which also funds two regional projects, one in Black Sea littoral countries and one in the Danube Basin, focusing on capacity building activities. The Fund constitutes a proposed envelope of US$70 million, to be approved by the GEF Council in several tranches, to grant-finance investment projects in the Black Sea/Danube Basin that aim at nutrient reduction. In May 2001, the GEF Council approved the first tranche of the Investment Fund, US$20 million.
Enabling activities to facilitate early action on the implementation of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in Congo
The objective of this Enabling Activities (EA) proposal is to build and strengthen national capacities and to enhance knowledge of decision makers, industrialists, NGOs and the general population on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). This will lead to the preparation and endorsement of a National Implementation Plan (NIP) for the Stockholm Convention on (POPs) by all stakeholders in Congo, in order to enable Congo to manage the elimination of POPs and fulfil the Stockholm Convention obligations.
Assessment of Capacity-building Needs and Country Specific Priorities in Biodiversity Including Clearing House Mechanism (add on)
1.Assist FSM in further assessing capacity building needs, identifying specific priorities, analyzing institutional and functional capabilities and determining capacity building actions necessary to protect national biodiversity in accordance with the NBSAP document, and the GEF additional criteria for enabling activities and CoP/CBD decisions; 2.Establish the Clearing House Mechanism (CHM); and 3.Implement a country-driven CHM project.
Self-Assessment of National Capacity in Tunisia to Manage the Global Environment
The principal objective of this proposed Tunisia NCSA project is to identify and determine the nature of these critical capacity constraints. The proposed project will also prepare a national strategy and action plan for addressing those constraints. The project will be the first step in a cyclical national process, whereby capacity will be regularly assessed and measures to improve capacity identified. The proposed project will focus on issues cutting across the three conventions, will build on existing institutional mechanisms, and will be fully participative
Community Management of the Bio-Itza Reserve Project
The project would assist Bio-Itza and Conservation International Guatemala to conserve and sustainable manage a sizable piece of land of great biological significance next to Tikal National Park, and other important areas in the central region of the Maya Biosphere Reserve, one of the largest reserves in Guatemala. It would empower indigenous communities to strengthen control of their land and manage it over the long term.
Preparation of the POPs National Implementation Plan under the Stockholm Convention
The objective of the project is to create sustainable capacity and ownership in Bangladesh to meet its obligations under the Stockholm Convention, including preparation of a POPs National Implementation Plan, and broader issues of chemicals safety and management as articulated in Chapter 19 of Agenda 21. The National Implementation Plan describes how Bangladesh will meet its obligations under the Convention to phase-out POPs sources and remediate POPs contaminated sites. The project will enable Bangladesh to ratify the Stockholm Convention and become a Party to the same.
Assessment of Capacity-building Needs and Country Specific Priorities in Biodiversity and Participation in the Clearing House Mechanism
The objectives of the project are: (1) to establish a CHM for the RMI to facilitate the effective exchange of technical and scientific biodiversity information in country, regionally, and internationally, and (2) to utilize the CHM to disseminate and share biodiversity information, ensuring its sustainability by creating partnerships and networks within country as well as regionally and internationally, This will involve local stakeholders, resulting in reliable and informed decisions regarding conservation and sustainable use of biological resources in the Marshall Islands.
