New project deploys EarthRanger to strengthen protected areas in Africa
The Global Environment Facility Council has approved a $7.2 million project to deploy EarthRanger to support the management of 4.9 million hectares of terrestrial protected areas (PAs) in three African countries. The effort will help enhance real-time prevention and response to escalating threats of poaching, human-wildlife conflicts, and habitat loss.

Combatting Illegal Wildlife Trade
The Global Environment Facility takes a holistic approach to tackling the poaching crisis by seeking to reduce both supply and demand which is driving the illegal wildlife trade, as well as targeted efforts to curb the actual trafficking. We support stronger monitoring and enforcement efforts, strengthening of legal and regulatory frameworks, and awareness raising.
GEF pandemic task force issues guidance
A group of leading experts and scientists convened by the Global Environment Facility has issued a white paper on the nexus between emerging infectious diseases and environmental degradation aimed at informing international efforts to build back better from COVID-19.
The experts’ report, published ahead the 59th GEF Council, explores ways protecting and conserving nature can address the current crisis and prevent future outbreaks, and proposes new avenues for investment and cooperation to meet these goals.
Connecting deforestation, wildlife, and pandemic risk
Representatives of the Global Environment Facility’s COVID-19 Task Force joined an International Conservation Caucus Foundation briefing for U.S. Congress members to present research on the links between deforestation, illegal wildlife trade, and health risks from zoonotic diseases, making the case for an integrated approach to tackling these challenges.
