Clearing House Mechanism Enabling Activity
This project will assist the national Government to meet its obligations under the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Coastal and Marine Biodiversity Management Project
The project will test and refine an approach to achieve sustainable economic development of coastal zone resources through a strategic development planning process that integrates their ecological, social and physical values, and balances the varying interests involved in their management.
Integrated Solar Combined Cycle Power Plant (formerly Solar Based Thermal Power Plant)
The project’s global environment objective is to demonstrate the economic feasibility of solar thermal based power generation worldwide by disseminating the corresponding experience with the aim of reducing project costs in the long-term. Furthermore, the it will reduce emissions of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. The project involves the construction and operation of a solar/fossil fuel hybrid power station in the range of 150 MW capacity. The Independent Power Producer (IPP) will be secured through either a Build Own Operate and Transfer (BOOT) or Build Own Operate (BOO) scheme.
Market Development for Solar Water Heaters
The proposed project activities will remove barriers related to i) improving the solar water heating quality, ii) reducing the price and improve affordability, iii) increasing awareness and iv) improving a policy context favourable for solar water heater market development. The GEF support is requested to cover the costs of activities that would catalyze penetration of this medium term market through a promotional phase whereby 100,000 sq.m. would be installed during a 4-year period resulting in direct Carbon abatements of about 350,000 tonnes.
Oaxaca Sustainable Hillside Management Project
The GEF MSP would support implementation of activities designed to address global environmental objectives, particularly those related to carbon sequestration. Specifically, the proposed GEF MSP would support targeted research to: (a) explore carbon sequestration impacts associated with improved land management practices in several production systems associated with the milpa; and (b) determine the social variables that possibly influence the process of adoption of practices to both increase soil carbon content and improve productivity of farmer resources.
El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve: Habitat Enhancement in Productive Landscapes
The goal of the proposed project would be to preserve the biodiversity in the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve buffer and influence zones. The specific project objective would be: to conserve biodiversity and increase habitat in the productive landscape of the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve buffer and influence zones by (i) preserving coffee cultivated under diverse shade trees, (ii) reconverting other coffee production regimes, and (iii) promoting other sustainable production opportunities.
Renewable Energy for Agriculture
The project will address initial investment cost barriers, information and institutional constraints currently preventing their widespread use. Specifically the project will support the following activities: Development of a market promotion strategy, promotion campaigns, innovative vendor financing/leasing programs (demonstrations), product certification. The investment demonstration component of the GEF project will address initial investment cost barriers and related risk perceptions both at the vendor and the rural client level.
Conservation and Sustainable Use of Tropical Peat Swamp Forests and Associated Wetland Ecosystems
The project’s goal is to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of globally significant biodiversity within Malaysia’s PSF areas through the pursuit of three objectives, namely demonstration of inter-sectoral planning, application of these plans, and institutional strengthening. The global biodiversity values found in Malaysia’s tropical PSF ecosystems are exemplified by the three sites selected for the present project, each of which represents a distinct PSF ecosystem complex in Malaysia.
Barrier Removal to Renewable Energy Programme
The project will help to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions by addressing institutional, information, know-how, perceived risk and other investment barriers to increased use of photovoltaic energy sources by households, institutions, commercial entities and agro industries. Specifically the project will: Assist local stakeholders in building local capacities to promote, install and service PV applications; help to develop and implement favorable regulatory frameworks, facilitate the establishment of viable financial mechanisms (micro lending).
Mulanje Mountain Biodiversity Conservation Project
The project will promote conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity , and the more equitable sharing of benefits accruing from forest resources in the globally significant and unique ecosystems of the Mulanje massif. Specifically, GEF funds would support activities to incorporate biodiversity conservation objectives effectively into Reserve management.
