Small Grants Programme
UNDP administer the GEF Small Grants Programme on behalf of the three GEF partner agencies. The program supports grassroots action that addresses global environmental problems. A key challenge in this effort is to identify community-based approaches that are relevant to people's daily needs and lives, while making a real contribution to the four GEF priority areas.
Lithuania Phase out of Ozone Depleting Substances
The main objective of this project is to assist Lithuania in the rapid phase-out of ODS consistent with international efforts in this direction. Assistance to enterprises representing the bulk of the consumption of ODS, would enable them to make the transition to non-ODS materials before legal supplies of ODS are discontinued. The project will also enable Lithuania to meet its phase-out obligations under the Montreal Protocol within a realistic time frame, and also ensure availability of technical assistance and to expedite the Country Programme implementation.

The project will develop Costa Rica's institutional capability and technical procedures to provide the scientific underpinning for policy analysis and decision making in greenhouse gas reduction and sinks enhacement; develop portfolio of cost effective GHG reduction and sinks enhancements policy options, measures and strategies; and catalyze mitigation policy and legislation development and implementation.

Renewable Energy-Based Electricity for Rural, Social and Economic Development in Ghana
Ghana's electric power is operated by two parastatal utilities: the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Electricity Corporation of Ghana (ECG). The VRA is responsible for power generation and transmission at 161 KVA and 225 KVA. The ECG is responsible for power distribution in the south; in the north, the Northern Electricity Department (NED), a subdivision of VRA, handles distribution. VRA and ECG report to the Ministry of Mines and Energy. The Government of Ghana is committed to extension of electricity services to every community of 500 people or more by the year 2000.
Enabling Uganda to Prepare its First National Communication in Response to its Commitments to UNFCCC
The project will be located within the Ministry of Natural Resources in the Department of Meteorology. At the inception of the project proposal and design, it was felt that in order for the objectives to be realized, an Interdisciplinary and Interministerial Committee (IIC) should be established to ensure the effective implementation of the project.
