Inka Terra: An Innovative Partnership for Self-Financing Biodiversity Conservation & Community Development
Goal: To catalyse self-financing uses of the 10,000 hectare Inka Terra Ecological Reserve (IER) that achieve biodiversity conservation and sustainable development for local communities. This is expected to provide a replicable model for engaging the private sector in achieving financial sustainability for protected areas.
Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity on the South African Wild Coast
At Pipeline entry: The project would assist the government of South Africa to conserve and sustainable manage biodiversity of global significant in one of the most important coastal areas of the country in the eastern Cape Province. It will seek to assess, plan and implement a strategy for the long-term management of the Wild Coast. It will prepare and implement and integrated land-use plan for the area aimed at nesting biodiversity conservation objectives into the regional sustainable development framework.
Agulhas Biodiversity Initiative (ABI)
The Agulhas Biodiversity Initiative (ABI) comprises one of three complementary GEF initiatives in support of C.A.P.E. aimed at strengthening systemic, institutional and individual capacities and establishing the know-how needed for conservation in different ecological and socio-economic conditions as needed to attain and sustain positive conservation outcomes. The initiative has been designed to distil lessons and best practices in Phase 1 of C.A.P.E., through demonstration activities geared to addressing gaps in the management framework, to inform implementation of subsequent phases.
Promoting Integrated Ecosystem and Natural Resource Management
This project will demonstrate integrated ecosystem and watershed management for sustainable rural development with conservation of globally significant biodiversity, carbon sequestration and protection of national and international hydrological resources in three areas in Honduras. GEF resources will be used to incorporate integrated ecosystem and watershed management objectives, principles, techniques and practices into a rural development programme, called FONADERS 2, implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and financed by the International Fund for Agriculture and Development (IFAD).
Biodiversity Protection in North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve
The project would assist the Government of Latvia in addressing the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in a biosphere reserve that covers approximately 6 percent of the country's territory. It will do so through the strengthening of the institutional, managerial, and financial sustainability of this protected area throguh legislation, policy analysis, strengthening instituional and stakeholder capacities to improve all aspects of the protected area (PA) management. . It will also integrate biodiversity conservation into the planning, management and sustainable use of the PA.

Design and implement a landscape level conservation program (CALM) through a "Living Landscapes" approach to conserve key components of biodiversity which are either unique to the landscape or for which the landscape acts as a critical range. To increase the capacity of Government staff, particularly at provincial level, to carry out biodiversity conservation. To increase awareness of conservation issues and priorities throughout stakeholders across the area.
Conservation of Globally Significant Biodiversity in the Landscape of Bulgaria’s Rhodope Mountains
GOAL: Globally significant biodiversity is protected by conserving the biological and cultural mosaic of habitats, species and land uses that comprise the Eastern and Western Rhodope landscapes. UAE is a high profile company in the Brazilian sugar mill industry and in the nearby major metropolitan area of Campinas. The mill produces both sugar and ethanol.
