Mercury-free mining: UNDP, GEF and the Government of Peru work together to reduce the use of mercury in artisanal and small-scale gold mining
In 2016, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) approved the Global Opportunities for Long-term Development of the Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining Sector (GOLD) programme to help artisanal gold miners eliminate the use of mercury in gold mining, reduce harmful risks to their health and the environment and create sustainable livelihood opportunities.
