Community-based Micro-financing and Small Enterprises
The private sector has a key role to play in driving sustainable development. Micro, small and medium enterprises account for 90 percent of the private sector and more than 50 percent of employment globally. As such the sector provides an opportunity for innovative, inclusive and sustainable economic development. The GEF Small Grants Programme facilitates partnerships between civil society, community-based organizations, and the private sector to scale up and promote the sustainability of community-led initiatives.

In Senegal ecovillage, children learn about nature alongside their ABCs
In Soussane, Senegal, children are taught to protect the environment alongside reading, writing, and arithmetic.
The introduction of nature to the curriculum at L’école de Soussane is only one of the significant changes to stem from the UN Development Programme project Participatory Conservation of Biodiversity and Low Carbon Development of Pilot Ecovillages at the Vicinity of Protected Areas in Senegal.

Mangroves can withstand soil and water conditions that would kill most plants, and yet these hardiest of tropical forests are vanishing from the Earth so quickly that every effort to protect them is of value – both locally and globally.
This is because mangroves have an outsized environmental and economic impact wherever they grow. They protect against coastal erosion, help with flood control, act as carbon sinks, and are unique ecosystems that harbor a wealth of fish, insect, bird, and reptile species.
