The project will directly address the development of indicators of biological diversity in four of the operational programme areas of the GEF biodiversity focal area: coastal, marine and freshwater ecosystems; forests; mountains; and agrobiodiversity. Case studies in each country will concentrate on one or two ecosystem types, chosen because that country has both nationally and globally important samples of that ecosystem type.

The objective of this Enabling Activities proposal is to strengthen national capacity and to enhance knowledge and understanding amongst decision makers, managers, industry, and the public at large on POPs to develop a National Implementation Plan. By achieving this objective Hungary will meet the obligations of the Stockholm Convention and be enabled to manage the elimination of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).

Climate, Water and Agriculture: Impacts on and Adaptation of Agro-Ecological Systems in Africa

The main goal of the proposed project is to develop multipliable analytical methods and procedures for assessing the impact of climate change on agriculture in Africa, to estimate how climate affects the current agricultural system, and to project how climate change might affect this system in the future. The project intends to develop suitable plans for adaptation, working closely with policy makers in the interpretation process. The analysis will compare farmer decisions and outcomes in one climate zone against choices farmers make in other zones.
