The project objective is to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide by improving energy management practices and identifying investments in SMEs through a structured approach. The approach will be built on and consistent with the Environmental Management System framework embodied in UNEP’s Cleaner Production programme.

The goal of the proposed project is to demonstrate the integrated ecosystem management of the Caatinga Forest and build multi-sector capacity so that development and poverty alleviation programmes for the semi-arid region contribute to the capture of global benefits in Biodiversity, Climate Change, Land Degradation, and Integrated Watershed Management.

Grasses comprise a large and diverse plant group that is probably the most important to mankind, yet has rarely been the focus of biodiversity projects. Another largely neglected group in biodiversity studies is insects and other arthropods, which represent about 70% of the world’s biodiversity. Both figure strongly in agrobiodiversity, as beneficial species (crops and enemies of pests) and as noxious species (weeds and crop pests) that nevertheless may act as reservoirs of beneficial species. Yet species and races of grasses and insects are under threat due to increasing human pressure.

The full GEF project proposal will address the transboundary concerns of the countries bordering the Gulf of Mexico Large Marine Ecosystem. These will be defined in the Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis and prioritised in the Strategic Action Programme (both of which will be completed during the PDF-B intervention). The main objective of this project will be to build the capacity and initiate governmental and institutional arrangements for planning and implementing region-wide efforts to address critical ecosystem and environmental problems in the GOMLME.

The objective of this proposed long-term program is to clean-up Africa from stockpiles of obsolete pesticides, including POPs, and introduce the preventive measures that would ensure sustainability of the operation by preventing the creation of new stockpiles. This would be achieved through a phased program with clearly established criteria for eligible activities and verifiable benchmarks between phases, implemented through a "strategic partnership" similar to the one adopted for the Black Sea-Danube Nutrient Reduction Program.

The project will help reduce GHGs from ground transport in Santiago through a promotion of a long-term modal shift to more efficient and less polluting forms of transport. To that end, the project will support the implementation of the 2000-2010 Urban Transport Plan for Santiago, which is consistent with the overall objectives of the GEF operational program on sustainable transport.

The main objective of the project is to decrease nutrients discharges into the Danube River and loads to the Black Sea, by improving the reduction of nutrients in effluent from wastewater treatment plants at Budapest and Dunaújváros and increasing the nutrient retention capacity at the Danube-Dráva National Park’s Gemenc and Béda-Karapancsa Region.

The context in which the project has been formulated is a need to mitigate flood events through rehabilitation and conservation of ecosystem functions, while simultaneously enhancing conservation and sustainable use of biological resources of global importance and strengthening sequestration of greenhouse gases.

The GEF has been working with African Governments through the UNCBD, UNFCCC and UNCCD to develop national environmental frameworks that support sustainable development and alleviation of poverty. This project aims at assisting African countries to consolidate this experience to address in a comprehensive and integrated manner the global environmental challenges facing the continent and promote regional and sub-regional collaboration as part of the Millenium African Renaissance Programme.

The overall objective of the project is to reduce nutrient pollution from agricultural sources in Moldova to the Danube River and Black Sea.
