The primary objective of the Niue NCSA is to “identify and determine the nature of critical capacity constraints and priority capacity needs faced by Niue as they relate to the global environment”. The above objective will be achieved through a series of internal self-assessments to be carried out by various stakeholders to evaluate their capacity at systemic, institutional and individual levels to implement Niue’s obligations under the CBD, UNFCCC and UNCCD. The assessment will also pay close attention to crosscutting issues for the 3 Rio Conventions to promote synergy wherever possible.

This proposed project is a targeted-research-project and will investigate techniques for conserving peatland areas to facilitate carbon accumulation while at the same time maintaining or enhancing their biodiversity. The objective of the project will be to address the capability of peatlands to act as significant carbon deposits, and provide recommendations on how these areas could be managed to ensure this attribute is maintained and even improved while protecting biodiversity.
