The project will demonstrate environmentally sound collection and destruction of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) stocks and Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS). This demonstration project will assist the countries involved in meeting their obligations under the Stockholm Convention and the Montreal Protocol and establish local capacities for destruction of ODS and some POPs substances. Through the demonstration activities the project aims to destroy a minimum of 11,700 MT of PCB/ODS containing waste and 4.14 MM of CO2e.

Enabling Activity Request
The overall objective of the proposed Enabling Activities (EA) is to review and update the National Implementation Plan (NIP), and have it endorsed and submitted by the government to the Conference of Parties (COP) of the Stockholm Convention. Participating stakeholders will be able to manage the additional POPs with newly developed technical skills, expertise and awareness.

The Global Environment Objective of the project is to reduce the negative ecosystem impact and achieve more sustainable shrimp/bottom trawl fisheries in the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region through implementation of an ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF), including bycatch and habitat impact management. The Development Objective of the project is to strengthen resilience of coastal communities through promotion of responsible fishing practices and livelihoods enhancement and diversification contributing to food security and poverty eradication.
