Assessment of Capacity-building needs for Biodiversity and Participation in Clearing House Mechanism

Estonia NBSAP identified several key areas where it was neccessary for the country to develop capacity to conserve and manage the use of biodiversity. However, certain constraints did not permit delineation of specific mechanisms needed to investigate these capacity building needs. As the biodiversity clearing house mechanism is not yet established in Estonia, the project will build up a national network for exchange of biodiversity information.

Assessments of Impacts and Adaptation to Climate Change in Multiple Regions and Sectors (AIACC)

Assessment of climate change impacts and adaptation options for the most vulnerable regions and sectors in developing countries will be targeted through an open process on scientific merit. Forty to fifty individual research activities are planned. The targeted regions and sectors represent gaps in the current assessments. This project will develop capacity to address these gaps through training, technology transfer, and interaction with international assessment teams.

Development of National Biosafety Frameworks

The overal objective of this project is to prepare for the entry into force the Cartagena Protocol on biosafety and in doing so, the project will contribute to assisting GEF eligible countries to prepare their national biosafety frameworks and promote regional collaboration and exchange of experience on issues of relevance to national biosafety frameworks.

The Program’s 15-year purpose is "to set up a national decentralized system for participatory management of natural ecosystems profitable for communities, private operators and the state". It is a building block to a national Decentralized Rural Development Program (DRDP) financed by IDA and other donors. Phase 1 development objective is "to establish and test in four geographical locations a decentralized system of participatory management of natural ecosystems".

Consolidation of the Protected Areas Program (SINAP II)

The GOM has embarked on a substantial strengthening and rationalization of the protected area system, including the establishment of an endowment fund (FANP) for 10 globally significant reserves. The overseeing ministry (SEMARNAP) now wishes to consolidate the PA system and to ensure its long-term sustainability.
