This project proposes to conduct specific, targeted research to fill critically important information gaps in the fundamental understanding of coral reef ecosystems so that management and policy interventions can be strengthened globally. The purpose of the targeted research is to test specific hypotheses related to major human and natural factors threatening coral reef health.

The main objective of the proposed GEF Philippines Electric Cooperative System Loss Reduction Project is to achieve significant and sustained energy efficiency improvements in rural ECs in order to provide current and prospective viable EC customers with reliable and least-cost power supply over the long term.

The project introduces a new multiple-use protected areas model to conserve global biodiversity resources in Azerbaijan, which is new to the country. The project’s development objective is to introduce improved natural resource management and related economic activities in two mountainous areas of Azerbaijan, in order to enhance the ecological quality and the sustainable productivity of high elevation forests and pastures.

The overall goal of this project is the conservation of globally significant biological diversity and transboundary water resources of the Prespa lakes Basin. The project’s objective is to catalyze the adoption of integrated ecosystem management (IEM) in the transboundary Prespa Lakes Basin of FYR-Macedonia, Albania, and Greece to conserve globally significant biodiversity, mitigate pollution of the transboundary lakes, and provide a sustainable basis for the Basin’s further social and economic development.

The objective of the project is to promote the adoption of integrated production systems in agricultural and livestock landscapes to increase productivity within a context of holistic ecosystem and natural resources management while conserving soils,water, grasslands, and biodiversity. IBRD will finance the productive and competitive components related to agriculture and livestock. The GEF component will finance the incremental costs required to restore or improve the capacity of the productive rural landscape to maintain ecological processes and conserve biodiversity.

The project is a replication of the Hungary Energy Efficiency Co-financing Program. IFC will employ a contingent financing modality which uses GEF resources to leverage IFC and private capital. Under the Project, IFC will provide partial guarantees, and related credit enhancement mechanisms adapted to country market conditions, supporting the financing of energy efficiency (EE) projects by domestic financial institutions (FIs), as well as private project sponsors. IFC will serve as guarantor pursuant to guarantee facility agreements with participating local FIs.

The overall project development and global environmental objectives of the proposed project are to: (i) improve the quality of sanitation services in Soroca; (ii) reduce the discharge of pollutants, including nutrients, from Soroca municipal sources that flow into the Nistru River and, subsequently, into the Black Sea; and (iii) demonstrate and disseminate through feasibility studies and workshops, cost-effective and affordable technologies for municipal wastewater treatment for the potential benefit of similar projects for Moldova’s existing wastewater treatment plants, for those towns in Mol

The national objective of the proposed project is to increase and sustain smallholder agricultural production, productivity and farm incomes and assist in the sustainable use of natural resources, by promoting the adoption of sustainable land and water management, at the microcatchment level, with full involvement of the farming community. The global objectives are threefold: (i) to address threats to biodiversity of global importance, (ii) enhance carbon sequestration in the agricultural landscape, and (iii) reverse land degradation in public and/or fragile lands..

This project represents a second, follow-on project to the first Energy Services Delivery project. That first project, to close in December 2002, targeted solar home systems, grid-based small hydro, small hydro village mini-grids, and energy efficiency, and has been one of the most successful projects in the GEF portfolio to date.
