Demonstrations of Innovative Approaches to the Rehabilitation of Heavily Contaminated Bays in the Wider Caribbean

This initiative is a follow up of the Pilot Phase PRIF project “planning and Management of Heavily Contaminated Bays and Coastal Areas in the Wider Caribbean”; the project areas were Havana Bay (Cuba), Puerto Limon (Costa Rica0, Cartagena Bay (Colombia) and Kingston Harbour (Jamaica). This PRIF project resulted in the development of investment and institutional strenghtening plans and in the identification of sources of financing for the implementation of remedial actions. Leveraged baseline investments in the four bays were in excess of $250 million.

Enabling activities for the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs): National Implementation Plan for Mauritania.

Within the overall objective of the Stockholm Convention, which is to protect human health and the environment from POPs, the project will: (i) prepare the ground for implementation of the Convention in Mauritania; (ii) assist Mauritania in meeting its reporting and other obligations under the Convention; and (iii) strengthen Mauritania’s national capacity to manage POPs and chemicals generally.

National Implementation Plan for the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants for Fiji

Within the overall objective of the Stockholm Convention, which is to protect human health and the environment from POPs, the project will: (i) prepare the ground for meeting Fiji’s obligations under the Stockholm Convention; (ii) assist Fiji in preparing a National Implementation Plan for POPs; and (iii) enable Fiji to prepare detailed action plans for reducing or eliminating POPs.

The main objective of the National Capacity Self-Assessment (NCSA) for Global Environmental management is thus to assess gaps and constraints of capacities facing Eritrea in its effort to meet national requirements and also its global environmental obligations in the areas of biodiversity, desertification and climate change.

The objective of the project is to create sustainable capacity in and ownership by the Government of Kazakhstan to meet its obligations under the Stockholm Convention, including initial preparation of POPs Implementation Plan, as wella s broader issues of chemical safety and management as articulated in Chapter 19 of Agenda 21. The implementation plan will describe how the govewrnment will meet its obligations under the convention to phase out POPs sources and remediate POPs contaminated sites in Kazakhstan.
