Project Objective: Protect biodiversity by fulfilling Costa Rica’s obligations as a Party to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (CPB) and implementing the country’s National Biosafety Framework for the safe management of Living Modified Organisms (LMOs).

To assist Guatemala to put in place a well articulated, effective and transparent national biosafety system through the development of the necessary policies, regulatory and technical instruments, and local capabilities in order to meet national development needs.

To achieve an effective application of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, by implementing Panama's national biosafety regulatory framework and developing national capacities to properly handle Living Genetically Modified Organisms (LMO) for the safeguard of biodiversity.

To have a workable and transparent national biosafety framework in place in Peru that will contribute to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity by enabling full implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (CPB) and of national biosafety regulations.

To strengthen national SFM policy, integrate community-based sustainable forest management into policy, planning and investment frameworks and create markets for sustainable bio-energy technologies that reduce CO2 emissions
• Stability of indices of ecosystem health, diversity and condition in target community-managed forests remain 100% of baseline levels

Building national human and infrastructure capacities for GMO detection and monitoring in the Cambodia.

Biodiversity management is integrated into forestry practices on community lands through market-based instruments

Improved management of coastal and marine ecosystems through efficient and effective inter- and intra-regional adaptive learning processes.

Improved energy security, greater affordability of energy services, and reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the power sector of the five participating countries.

The project aims to assist Lao PDR to have a workable and transparent National Biosafety Framework by 2010, to fulfill its National Socio-economic Development Plan and implement its obligations as a Party to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.
