Conservation of Biodiversity through Effective Management of Wildlife Trade

Project Document
Domestic and international trade in wildlife species plays an important role in national and local economies, and bushmeat constitutes a major source of protein for rural communities in Gabon. At the same time, much of the trade in wildlife in the region is unregulated and almost nothing is known about the impact of trade on biodiversity. Improved knowledge and management of wildlife and its trade is urgently needed to protect biodiversity in the region, and to ensure sustainable use of the resource and its continued contribution to economic development.

A Dynamic Farmer-Based Approach to the Conservation of African Plant Genetic Resources

Project Document
This is a biodiversity conservation project which addresses a neglected aspect of plant diversity, that of indigenous crop varieties maintained by farmers in dynamic agro-ecosystems such as those found in Ethiopia. Efforts to conserve crop diversity to-date have focused on maintaining genetic diversity in static ex situ gene banks. This has arrested the complex interaction of genetically diverse traditional varieties (landraces) with their associated pests, predators and pathogens.

Development of Wildlife Conservation and Protected Areas Management

Project Document
Project raises scientific and technical capacity of government officials to establish and manage protected areas and communicate their importance to local people. Trains staff in management planning, develops investment strategies as part of management plans, establishes four new portected areas, and reduces human/elephant conflict through survey of elephant population.

Through comprehensive professional development and preparation of a BAP, will provide an umbrella framework for concerted biodiversity action in Vietnam and will facilitate leveraging additional funds for priority conservation and sustainable development activities from both national and international sources. The BAP and Conservation Training components are complementary activities which will accelerate implementation of a national programme for conservation of biodiversity designed in the BAP.

Patagonian Coastal Zone Management Plan

Preservation of Patagonia's biodiversity and protection of this economically-important area through enhancing sustainable management of coastal resources. By strengthening institutions, developing human resources, and contributing valuable environmental information, project will establish integrated coastal zone management plan which will enhance existing capacities and decision-making.

Restoration of Highly Degraded and Threatened Native Forests in Mauritius

Project ConceptProject Document
The project aims at the restoration of a plot of highly degraded native forest in the Black River Gorges National Park. Through consultation with restoration ecologists, an effective means of controlling exotic weeds which are threatening the native forests will be developed. It will also document and restore to the extent possible the biological diversity of the degraded native ecosystem.

Institutional Support for the Protection of East African Biodiversity

Project Document
This regional project (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda) supports existing government and non-governmental organziations that are concerned with the conservation and management of natural resources to enhance their capacity to deal with biodiversity conservation. This project combines institutional support (education, in-service training and awareness-enhancing activities) with on-the-ground conservation activity that is intended to put training into practice.

Sustainable Development and Management of Biologically Diverse Coastal Resources

Project Document
Comprehensive planning of coastal resource management to preserve globally-significant and economically-vital marine ecosystem. This innovative project includes training, laying groundwork for zoning plans, and assistance with developing permanent statutory authority charged with preserving and managing littoral zone nationwide.
