The objective of the project is to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of the globally significant biodiversity of Eritrea's coastal, marine and island (CMI) ecosystems. These are currently threatened by the rapid development of fisheries, tourism and oil exploration. The project will facilitate sustainable development of the CMI resources, through a participatory management framework, establishment of conservation areas and species programs, an operational information system, and increased public awareness of the needs and benefits of CMI biodiversity.

The project will conserve an ecological corridor along the northwest Black Sea shelf in Ukraine. Conservation and sustainable use objectives will be achieved by coordinated activities inside and outside of protected areas including: protected area planning, land management compatible with biodiversity objectives in agricultural landscapes, strengthening of governmental agencies and NGOs in biodiversity management and education, and improved international cooperation.

This project deals with awareness, outreach, and support for technical analyses and scientific consensus on issues related to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and Conference of Parties (COPs). A consortium of international agencies and NGOs will be executing project activities that involve more than 1,500 individuals and institutions from over 105 countries. The project will constitue Phase II of the GBF's ongoing work.
