The purpose of this project was to contribute to the creation of the framework for a long-term solution to the problem of pollution of the Danube River Basin. The project had four main objectives in order to facilitate the formulation of a Danube Action Program: collecting pollution emission data and creating regional data network, identifying policy and legal options, and feasibility studies for local and international funding.

The overall, long term global objective of the project is to ensure the continuous availability of agro-biodiversity in the Fertile Crescent that is essential, not only to the sustainable development of agriculture in that region, but also for global food security and production.

Capacity Building and Infrastructure: Participation in the Assessment, Methodology Development, and other Activities of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

The project aims to enhance and strengthen scientific and technical capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition through their experts' participation in IPCC activities, primarily in: (i) the actual writing of the IPCC assessment reports; (ii) IPCC workshops involving both (a) scientific and technical data and (b) training in various IPCC methodologies; and (iii) summarizing the findings of the assessment reports into Executive Summaries and Summaries for Policy-makers.

South Pacific Biodiversity Conservation Programme

Project protects biological diversity of 15 island states by facilitating establishment of conservation areas with agreed criteria for development based on long-term ecological sustainability. Supports scientific and technical assessments, trains NGO and government officials, facilitates extensive consultations with local groups, assists with initial management of protected areas, and raises public awareness.

The programme is based on implementation of the Important Bird Area (IBA) process. The IBA process is the application of internationally agreed criteria to define the global importance of sites for biodiversity conservation at a national level, followed by a cycle of monitoring, action and advocacy to ensure the conservation of sites, in perpetuity. National and local capacity for achieving biodiversity conservation is built through the process.

Inventory, Evaluation and Monitoring of Botanical Diversity in Southern Africa: A Regional Capacity and Institution Building Network

Through networking and developing existing capacities within the southern African region, this project will build the effective capacity of professional and support staff in 10 countries to inventory, evaluate and monitor some 30,0000 species of flowering plants and ferns (10% of the global flora) within arid, mediterranean, forest, mountain, coastal and wetland ecosystems.
