Biodiversity Action Plan
This project will assist the national Government to meet its obligations under the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Biodiversity Planning Support Programme
This project will draw on the full range of national and global experience to develop and provide the information, tools, training, and communication needed to develop and implement comprehensive, multisectoral, and timely NBSAP’s, and to ensure a smooth transition between the development and implementation stages. Activities include the development of information services, preparation of technical and advisory materials, training, and enhancing horizontal exchange and co-operation among Parties.
Mountain Areas Conservancy Project (MACP)
The objective of the project is to support the conservation of biodiversity in Krakoram-Hindu Kush in the western Himalayan mountain in northern Pakistan. This is an area approximately 1.1 million ha in size in four montane ecological zones. One site on the confluence of the Himalaya and Karakoram ranges is famous for more than 250 varieties of medicinal plants and species, including the endangered Kot (costus roots). Another site in the alpine habitats is an important flyway for over 200 species of birds.
Paraguayan Wildlands Protection Initiative
The project would address conservation and sustainable use issues in the la Plata Basin which is endowed with biological diversity of global significance, including several endemic species. The project would assist key stakeholders to strengthen the institutional framework and to establish the necessary structures to conserve and sustainably manage priority biological diversity. The project would also enable Paraguay manage its national biological stock in a more integrated and holistic way.
GEF Country Workshops
This proposed workshop program seeks to build country capacity and promote awareness-building by means of direct (and indirect) communication through targeted, participatory workshops. The proposed GEF Country Workshops will educate a broad-based national audience about the GEF—its mission, strategy, policies and procedures; promote country level coordination and sharing of information; promote practical information on how to access GEF resources and how to propose, prepare and implement GEF-financed activities; and disseminate information on best practices and lessons learned.
Small Grants Programme (Second Phase)
The development goal of the second operational phase of the GEF/SGP is to assure global environmental benefits in the areas of biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation and protection of international waters from community-based approaches. The rationale for the next phase is rooted in the belief that local solutions to global environmental problems exist and have been successfully implemented through the programme thus far while at the same time recognizing that there still is an unrealized potential to enhance the impact of the programme within the GEF system as a whole.
In-Situ Conservation of Native Cultivars and Their Wild Relatives
The long-term goal of this project is the conservation of agrobiodiversity in Peru, one of the world’s most important centers of origin of crop and plant genetic diversity. This project will target 11 important crop species, including several local varieties and wild relatives, for conservation of their genetic diversity within functioning agroecosystems.
Creating A Co-Managed Protected Areas System
The overall objective of this project is to improve effective protection of existing protected areas by encouraging community co-management of these areas. Belize is unique in that it is still dominated by forest cover that provides extensive areas of natural habitat for some 4,000 species of plants, 150 mammal species (15 endangered/threatened), 540 bird species (33 endangered/threatened), and 151 species of amphibians and reptiles, all within a surface area of only 22,965 km2.
Decentralized Rural Energy Project
The project will promote the adoption of renewable energy by privately-owned and operated solar photovoltaic equipment supply and service operations. Barrier removal activities will address: insufficient information about the real PV market; high risk for rural credit providers; limited technological know-how and institutional capacity; and inadequate regulations.
Conservation of Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management
This is a pilot project to strengthen Syria’s capacity to protect and sustainably manage biodiversity in an area of global importance. The proposed project site is under severe threats from continued agricultural expansion, grazing, firewood collection and recreational activities. Proposed activities would integrate sustainable use of natural resources through management schemes and define and implement alternative livelihoods for local communities with the objective of reducing population pressures at the site.
